Hello. This was discussed on Vinyl Engine and a wiring diagram posted that might be of help. The high voltage diagram is the one for UK mains.
As Michael says, it will need to be a high wattage control but not sure of the actual rating.

Edit: further reading shows a 25 watt OHMITE RHS10KE being a good fit if you can find one.
