I've used a 'Cree' LED bulb in a couple of my torches, and they are the dog's bits.
They are on ebay: Cree LED 3W E10 Screw Bulb Replacement Torchlight Head Bulb
I've not used that particular supplier, but that's the thing. The light emission is positioned at just the right place to replace a filament bulb and it's bright with long battery life.
