Over many years, Al, my approach has changed. At one time, I would (and did) wade in and modify gear. However I now realise that I probably detracted from the equipment's value as well as spoiling its originality. The time-honoured 'radio ham' approach to modifying stuff doesn't always fit comfortably with my desire to repair and restore equipment to its original state wherever possible. I acknowledge that mods can improve performance, but nowadays I generally prefer not to modify, unless repair is impossible without so doing.
