Hi Mike,
If you have batteries that are OK then a first and very simple check is to see if the mains/battery switch in the mains socket is sticking. You will see this as a plastic ramp at the lower side of the mains input socket. I have just tried it on mine and it can be pressed down with gentle pressure of a screwdriver. It should return on release. Pressing it down cuts off the radio completely.

I hope you solve the problem because the set is quite a good performer.
