Just for completeness should anyone with the same question look at this thread in the future, Tony suggested...
The secret is to program a fixed status but with no means of using it! (parameter #143) as the freq prefix (eg 70).
The channels are programmed so that the first 2 digits after the decimal point (eg. 70.450MHZ) is programmed into channel 45.
