I bought one about a year ago in our local Aldi.
The macro appears to be automatic.
You are right about the flash. It is just fixed power and is either too bright or gutless.
It works well with a powerful LED lamp or out doors.
I bought it because the focus had developed a lot of back lash on my old Fuji.
