Replacement stylus for BSR P128
 

Hi,

I'm trying to find a good replacement stylus for my BSR P128.

Someone mentioned that the Audio Technica AT91 should work with it but I wanted to be sure before purchasing.

Are you wanting a stylus or a complete cartridge with stylus?

If you want to change the cartridge it will need to match the amplifier as well as the record player turntable.

Ideally yes.

I think the cartridge is the original one so could do with being replaced.

I don’t have the knowledge to help but we know the deck BSR P128, if you post the amplifier someone may be able to give you the best advice.

Cartridges tend not to wear out. What is the cartridge already in your P128? What is the amplifier you plan to use it with? A photo would save much iteration!

Hi,

Apologies, I should have mentioned that it is part of an old radiogram.

It's part of a HMV 24554.

I can take a pic if it's still not clear?

Your BSR P128 looks similar to my BSR MP60. I replaced its original cartridge and stylus with a Audio Technica AT95E and it works well.

It should do the job nicely.

If it's part of a radiogram, it's unlikely that an AT91 magnetic cartridge will work without an additional preamplifier to boost and tailor its output to suit the radiogram amplifier input.

This is getting into the realms of some technical expertise required.

Back to photos needed I think. Info on the 24554 is a bit thin online- it may be a separates system rather than a typical radiogram in which case my first statement may be wrong......

Looks like the cartridge could be magnetic, can you confirm what cartridge is in the player?

If it’s magnetic the AT91 may be ok, it’s output is 3.5mv into 47kohms, if the original is a similar spec it should be ok.

This HMV seems to be very similar to the well-renowned GOODMANS units of the same period (i.e. early 1970s). By this time, they had the same parent company (BRC. British Radio Corporation).

So yes, it could well be a magnetic cartridge, in which case an AT91 would be great.

But as before, we need pics of the cartridge already fitted please.

I think we were thrown by the use of your word "Radiogram".....It appears that your unit is a reasonable quality "Seperates" system and is likely to already have an inbuilt RIAA pre-amp suitable for a Magnetic cartridge. I suspect there is nothing wrong with your cartridge at all, especialy as it was selected by HMV to match the unit, and all you will need is a new stylus. Now we need to know what make is the cartridge, and yes, a photo would really help! For info, the BSR P128 is similar to the BSR MP60, but with a lighter platter.

Well sort of, I suppose. "Unit audio" was the term at the time, I think.

But I agree, a "radiogram" or "stereogram" always implies a big piece of furniture with the speakers built-in too.

You're right, "Unit Audio" is the best descriptor.
I guess I meant bought as a complete system with seperate speakers - whereas "seperates" usually means that everything is, er, seperate.

Sorry for the late replies.

I'll take some pics later tonight.

AFAIK, there weren't any identifying labels on the cartridge, unless my memory fails me and they were at the top, shielded by the tonearm.

The stylus currently is an original Shure white coloured one.

The pics that someone found were not of the unit I have so I may have posted the wrong number from the back of the unit. I did do a search on the unit myself and there is little to no info on this particular one.

Would the Audio Technica AT95E suggested earlier work ok?

Apologies for the delay.

I've attached some pictures of the record player including the turntable deck as well as the current stylus, cartridge and all model numbers I could find without disassembling the unit itself.

I appreciate any thoughts or comments.

That's a Shure M75-6. You can buy replacement styluses for it from third party manufacturers but I would just replace it with an AT91, which has similar performance and is easily available. Other possibles are the AT95E, though you may not see much benefit for the extra money, and the Rega Carbon, which is an AT91 with a tweaked stylus.

One thing though - does the head have standard cartridge mounting arrangements? If it doesn't then you may need to glue the cartridge or stick it in place with a bit of Blu-tack or double sided tape.

It's up to you. Shure don't make replacement styluses now so any you can buy will be from third party companies. Quality varies so you're taking a bit of a chance.

If you change the cartridge it will come with a new stylus from the cartridge manufacturer. Personally I would change the cartridge unless there will be some difficulty in fitting it. All the cartridges I mentioned are pretty cheap and well regarded at their price point. The Rega Carbon in particular has received some very good reviews - I use one.

Looking at eBay now, you can buy an M75-6 stylus for £11. An AT91 cart is £18 and a Carbon is £26.
