Another pulse to tone possibility
Anybody tried one of these little Chinese rascals? Looks like they'd be about £20 with slow postage.

That's a good find for a device similar to the Dialgizmo
There is also another device working on the RotaTone principle HERE At that price maybe I'll buy those rather than build any more of my home built ones. |
Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
Not met that one before, but the price (at $27 including postage to UK) compares well with that of the dialgizmo, albeit uncased. I see no mention of speed dial facilities such as those of the dialgizmo, so it depends whether these are important to you.
Although it comes without a casing, it looks as though it would be small enough to mount inside the pattress of a flush-mounting telephone socket. If you fancy giving one a try, I'd be interested to hear how you get on. |

Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
It does come with a case Dave, I've just ordered one and will let you know how it all goes

Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
I see no mention of a case in the (rather quaintly-worded) advertisement referenced at the start of this thread, and the image doesn't show one.
The same applies to the internal module referenced later. |

The third picture shows a cream-coloured case: https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1HQ_YX...erican-and.jpg.

Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
The item pictured at the foot of my post #2 is basically the circuit Joe ThePillenwerfer described. My contribution was to miniturise it using a sandwich of two fragments of perforated project board so it fits into the tiny eBay trinket case shown.
I'll gladly post the layout I used next week and if nothing else, following Joe's instructions will teach you a useful skill; how to programme Atmel microcontrollers |

At least 3 of the reviews show it in a case.

Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
Yes, I missed the third image with the case. So all you need to add is a line cord (and any adaptors for equipment with BT plugs).

I'll go see about buying in the parts. Did you consider getting PCBs done? Also, second question, did you replace the zener + resistors with a 78L05, and researching it some more, did you fit a protection diode on the VCC of the microcontroller ? Thanks - exciting |

Have you read this?: https://bre.is/meI9Rerwik

Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
I see that the alldav.com converter reviewed therein is now priced at $25. Given that the the review was dated November 2012, I suppose a 25% increase over 6½ years isn't excessive - though electronics prices tend to go in the other direction

Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
I ordered one of these and it has just arrived. IT DOESN'T WORK.
Wish I'd read the reviews before ordering as it seems about half of them don't work and the supplier won't refund. Will get on to PAYPAL if they won't refund me. |
Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
Any supplier that won't refund a faulty item is to be avoided like the plague, so please accept both my commiserations for your experience and my thanks for the warning.
If the seller were in the UK, they would presumably be in breach of the law and could be prosecuted. At least PayPal should come to your rescue. By the way, was this the Chinese offering or the one from alldav? |
Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
Mine has just arrived and doesn't work either! I'm waiting for a response from the seller but I expect it will be the same as winston_1's was.
I've had the alldav one for a few years and that works fine. |

It's working! Because of the lack of instructions I had assumed that it was wired the same as the alldav and Dialgizmo as they all look the same - not so! The RJ11 socket is the output and the other end is the input.
I wired a female BT to the 2 terminals inside and an RJ11 to BT plug into the socket and it works perfectly. Remember when wiring the lead that the 2 INSIDE contacts on the RJ11 are the line. |
Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
I must admit that I too would have assumed the RJ11 to be for the 'phone and the screw terminals for connection to the line. Well done for establishing that it is the other way round. I wonder how many of the reported failures result from the false assumption.
Incidentally, when I bought my Dialgizmo its label had inadvertently been stuck on the wrong way round so that the socket was labelled "line" and the plug "phone". Once I had established the error I peeled off the label and turned it round. |
Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
Really! All the pictures imply the line goes to the RJ45 socket. I'm away at the moment till Friday but will certainly try it when I return. Thanks for the info. Why oh why can't they supply instructions?

Re: Another pulse to tone possibility
Looking at the PCB more closely it does actually say TELEPHONE between the 2 terminals!
Another thing to mention is that because it's a 2 wire connection, if the phone you want to plug in has been converted, you'll need a ringing capacitor. The BT socket I wired in has one in it but you could cut the plug off an old ADSL filter and wire that to the 2 terminals as they have a capacitor in. |
