Help with a Triumph CTV 8000 Colour TV/monitor.
 

Hi.
I wandered if anyone knows any more info on these?
I've seen some tvs listed as Grundig/Triumph but I can't find any info on the net about these.
The screen is Orion branded see photos.
I have 2, 1 works fine, the other has sound no picture, the screen did come on once, I knocked the left hand side of the casing with the other one accidentally.
I will be looking for any bad connections or failing solder joints etc.
The one that works has scuffed plastics and broken aerial mount, so this one I plan to install a generic retro console inside to make a portable retro arcade. But I would like the other one working first.

As far as I remember these were made by Orion who supplied badged sets to Currys and Dixons. They were pretty good with few serious faults. As you suggest, the cleaner one probably has dry joints, and I'd resolder the line driver transformer's connections first as that was a weak spot on Orion TVs of that era.
As they are getting on now, it's worth checking the wedges that hold the scan coils in place. The silicone used to fix these on 14" Orion tubes used to rot the coils. You can see a big white blob of adhesive on your fourth picture. You can carefully remove the wedges and clean the area if necessary and reattach with a non-acetic silicone. Hopefully you won't need to.

As most of you know, i collect miniature B&W & colour TVs. USA/Eu/UK.
The Triumph CTV-8000 is a pretty iconic set of the mid-eighties.

It exists under a variety of labels (TMK, Orion, Irradio, Triumph...) and with its distinctive upright/narrow presentation appeared in most European B/G, I markets as well as in the USA/Japan.

The design evolved through time with several iterations going from RF/Antenna-only reception to full Monitor status with A/V inputs and outputs.

An interesting design of miniature Solid-State colour TV history, and doesn't take up much floor space for collectors and today's young retro-gamers.

I believe that Triumph was an own-brand of Comet.
But like many other own-brands, it was probably one of many re-badges of a common Manufacturer.

I love them, the picture quality is actually very good, the colours are great too.

I think Triumph were from Currys. Comet used Proline, Wharfedale and a few others. Of course I could be wrong...
You'll notice this TV was made in Japan so its reliability was excellent.
One Triumph TV set we saw quite often was a badged Toshiba 22" in a basic grey-fronted cabinet. True to form, the only part that gave trouble were the (non-Toshiba) customer controls.

I am confident you are not. Triumph was a Currys in house brand (as was Westminster). When Dixons took over Currys in the early 1989s, Triumph was dropped in favour of Matsui (as it sounded Japanese - with the association of quality and reliability). Dixons already used Saisho (they previously used Prinz).

The association of the brand name Triumph to Grundig is probably from the Grundig ownership of office equipment maker Triumph Adler. I think they sometimes had radio or TV sets with Triumph as a model name as well.

Both obviously unrelated to the house brand Triumph used on this (Orion made?) set.

I thought the name was to give the impression of a reliable British name as in the motorcycles. However it was (is?) also the name of an equally reliable bra manufacturer! Well, would you want a Playtex TV? The brand was soon dropped in favour of Matsui.

You might be interested in following this US VK thread.
Talk is about CANDLE JCTV 0502 and JCTV 0500, both 5" colour NTSC transistorized TV of the mid-eighties. I believe, from experience, that OTAKE of Japan was the OEM.
Look them up. They started 5" color TVs, big heavy horizontal tabletop chassis circa 1985.
Sold a bunch as 625 PAL B/G German models then with SECAM L modified for France.
Re-labelled, world-wide under a bunch of private labels (Irradio in Italy for instance).
Lots of ORION brand TVs in Germany.

Except for the very early models, they all have that slim vertical aspect similar appearance.
Some are TV only, some have AM/FM Radio.
Some later models have A/V inputs, earlier ones don't.

I'm pretty sure Orion is the OEM for Otake, and not the other way around.

Pictures of late 1990's models show typical Orion type labels on Otake branded equipment. Radiomuseum.org seems to classify various Otake models under Orion, though I don't know which evidence was used for that. I'll look into it a bit more.
