HMV 901 at Sanford Mill Museum
4 Attachment(s)
Hi All,

Having now obtained permission to make this public, I thought I would post a few photos of the HMV 901 which is at Sanford Museum in Chelmsford.

Sanford Mill museum is part of Chelmsford museum and is focussed on Chelmsford's industrial heritage. The museum is only open to the public a few days a year.
On this occasion I was not able to attend myself, so I got my Dad to take a few photos. The pictures were not easy to take as the set is somewhat boxed in at the moment.

The set is in superb original condition. It retains its control instruction cards and even the original coax lead and plug.
IIRC the set is single standard, so EMI system only.
The serial number is H7242

The 901 was formally part of the Science Museum reserve collection and was obtained by the Sanford Mill curator as an examle of a pre-war Marconi EMI television, highlighting the connection between Chelmsford and the development of televison.
The museum is also home to a collection of Marconi TV cameras from the 1950s including a rare MK2 (for which I donated a lense turret).

I hope in future to take some more photos of this set.

Thanks for the photos Andy.

Indeed in very good condition.
Not many sets appear to still have the antenna coax connector.

Best regards,

I didn't realise that these sets had a lock on the lid. Probably to stop the servants having a crafty watch in the household's absence!
Cheers, Pete.

Looks great Andy.
If you ever get the chance to see the chassis serial numbers I'd be very interested.
That's the first 901/702 that I've seen with a lid lock. I take that back having just seen Jac's posting. I hadn't spotted the lock on Steve's 702.

Steve has 901 H 7099 without a lock and 702 H 1174 with the lock.

Thanks for posting.

Hello Pete,

In fact is is very rare to see a lock for the lid on a 901 or 702.
I think the 702 of Steve McVoy has a lock, but I can't recall any others at this moment.
Not all 900's have a lock, but a lot do.

Thank you Peter,

That's the 702 of Steve McVoy.
I'm sure there are others with a lock, but most have no lock.

Both my Marconi 702 and HMV 901 don't have lid locks. The lock must have been fitted on early production models. The EHT transformer in the 901 has burned out. It's not the original, possibly a post war EMI service replacement.
