Problem with vintage dial 24c on Bakelite 332 phone

Hi everyone
I am having a problem trying to get a type 24c AEG dial to work with a 332 Bakelite phone.
The symptoms I get when I wire the dial in are: There is no dial tone, and if you ring into the phone the bells ring but if you pick up the receiver the bell doesn't stop ringing.
I have tried this on a working phone so know it must be the dial that is the problem.
Everything mechanically seems OK, I have cleaned all the points and they seem to be working OK and the dial is quick enough returning.
I am wondering whether it is wired up correctly, as it is set out differently to a type 10 or 12.
I have tried to wire it according to a standard wiring diagram but without success.
I am attaching a picture of the way it is wired now and just wondered if anyone knows whether this is correct.
Many thanks for reading.

This is the dial commonly fitted to ITI (Indian Telephone Industries) phones. Have a look at this link:

There is a photo of the circuit diagram half way down the page which might help.

I am pretty sure your wiring is wrong. The Blue and Slate (grey) wires should go to one of the off-normal contacts (to short the earpiece), they seem to be going to the impulse contats.

Silly suggestion. Try mirror-reversing the wires.

The diagram here: https://www.britishtelephones.com/gp...t322paster.jpg

indicates that the dial is wired wrong.

Tony has spotted it, that will make it work!

Yes the wires were in the reverse order. Re-did them and it worked perfectly.
Seems like quite a nicely engineered dial. Made in Liverpool back in the days that we used to make things in the UK.
I attach a photo of the dial wired in the correct order.
Thanks all for the advice.

The diagram above shows a PO 'Dial No 12' fitted not a 24C. The GPO didn't use the 'Dial 24C' which was a AT&E description. The circuit diagrams don't show the layout of the terminals - which are shown on the attached diagram.
Note that terminals are numbered in the opposite direction on the AT&E dial to the GPO ones. GPO number clockwise and the AT&E dial anti-clockwise for the relevant contacts.
