Have you thought about getting hold of a working clock just for the motor. In the past I have even bought new old stock boring looking clocks just for the motors for well less that a tenner on eBay or at flea markets.

I'll second that! Did you go on to be a professional woodworker?

No I didn't but I've always dabbled in it. I think I must have inherited something from my maternal grandfather (in South Africa) who worked in forestry. They had lots of exotic (and expensive) hardwoods there. I never met him as he died very young. The cause of death is listed as 'sunstroke', which has always puzzled us a bit.

Hello,

This clock is now working again. The hands have been cleaned and polished and a new movement obtained from Cousins and fitted. It is very quiet, better than the old one.

I also installed a new 3 core mains cable instead of 2 core. The hands are now earthed - for the first time in 54 years. Better late than never I suppose!

Glad to hear that it worked out for you.
