The ones on the card are an interesting example of how things used to be though. I would guess at 1950s though I'm sure someone can date them exactly.

Radiospares were supplying this type of electrolytic in the sixties, possibly before, mostly sourced from Plessey I think.

They are only 160V so not much use for most mains power valve radios except Battery Mains portables.

I think I would be inclined to keep them as a nice demo piece but you could check to see if at least one would reform just for fun I agree with Barry I would not be inclined to actually use them :thumbsup:

Looks like a PM2. If you wave your fingers over the top and chant the word MULLARD the letters magically appear. Nice vintage RS components. J.

I was trying to recall when Radiospares became RS components. I do recall annoying the rep. by still refering to them as Radiospares!

I used to visit their trade counter off Tottenham Court road in 1954 - so they must be getting on a bit.

Started in 1937 - I think I still have a circa 1958 catalogue - it`s a lot smaller than they became before they stopped sending them out.

I'm not old enough to remember the early days. But I do remember the growth in the catalogues. In my first memory, I reckon about 12mm thick? By the time they stopped sending automatically, I think there were five or six, in a holder, probably 100 / 150mm thick. It became really wasteful because several of us in the same office received them and we all used the online version anyway. That said, one person insisted on keeping a set, even though the only thing they were ever used for was attracting dust.

1960 catalogue. 67 pages, all TV and radio related. You could still buy line cord back then. J.

Much to my pleasant surprise, I recently successfully reformed a couple of those Radiospare electrolytics of that style. They were in a 1960s home brew tape recorder.

They were essential at work as we didn't have access to the website on the shop floor, but became less useful once they stopped sending them out, as we kept ordering items from outdated catalogues then finding a few weeks later the part was no longer available. :wall:
Anyway work solved that problem by ceasing to do electronic repairs. :censored:

Even though my ordering is very sporadic and usually less the (mostly very much less than) £100, both RS and Farnell maintain my accounts just fine.

I took this to mean (although I could be wrong) Line Dropper Cord.

Much beloved of 120 V conversions, Pilot little Maestro's and Champion Kits.

I think the last time I was able to buy a new piece was at Harpy in the Mid 80's it came of a reel marked RS.

The last RS catalogues I received are dated Oct 06/ Sep 07. I still consult them from time to time as they contain a wealth of information. Like a lot of people I tend to hang on to old catalogues although a lot of the information can now be found on the internet. How I wish this facility was available when I started work. Peter.

There used to be sets of RS catalogues all over the office so many sets some were never opened.
Most of us still miss them since the search engine RS use is terrible.

I have a lot of Radiospares parts still on their cards or in boxes.

The Radiospares parts "replacement for" seemed to usually good quality and a drop in replacement.

It's a wonder they still survive our company discourages even the development teams ordering RS parts these days.

They're on our (university) approved supplier list, which suggests they are amongst the most expensive and the institution is determined to spend as much as possible - somehow it always seems to work out that way!

I remember line cord, we had several drums of it mostly for imported from the USA small radios. Wouldn't have thought there was any call for it now, I believe it contained asbestos in the olden days.

When we first had it radio spares were all it contained, then they started doing TV spares, very useful firm.

The rep used to call once a month for many years, then once in three months then once a year I seem to remember, then as previously mentioned - closed my account!

RS did venture briefly into the hobby market with a selected range of RS components,
around the mid 70's known as Doram electronics.
