IF lower core adjustment
 

Does anyone have a clever way to deal with the problem of adjusting an IF lower core where the direct line to the hole is somewhat obscured by components?

If you are using a signal generator, you could remove the top core and peak the bottom core for max signal from the top of the transformer. I've done this before and it seemed to work quite well...certainly better than being hopelessly out of alignment. Putting the top core back in theoretically will affect the adjustment of the bottom core slightly but probably not enough to matter too much. Make sure you align to the correct peak...normally when the cores are in their outer positions.

This method probably wont work if you are aligning by ear and using weak signals!

Some cores had hexagonal holes right through them, and this allowed you to adjust both from either the top or the bottom. They don't seem very common though. Short of shifting components I can't think of an easy fix.
