Socket to me (sorry)...
 

This (image attached) is a McMurdo octal socket. It connects the two chassis (RF and Power) together in a Murphy A188C console radio receiver.

Q. Has anyone any useful thoughts as to how two separate the two halves without damaging it - or even better has succeeded in doing so?

Any advice most gratefully received.

The metal top just pushes on. The socket will be a regular octal part without the flange that screws to the chassis. I bought some male ones to make adapters to replace an octal valve with a more modern one. The one you has a groove around the edge and a slot for the pip.
Mine are a little bit less meaty and do not have the depth for the groove that the indent close to the slot fits in on yours. There will be a notch for the pip.
It should pull off.

This one is 11 pin, but the shell looks identical


Broad bladed screwdriver in the radial slot and twist until the shell moves > 1mm then use a smaller tool to ease the shell back all around the circumference pushing the cable through the grommet at the same time
