Wireless Set 19 Mk3 transmit.

hi,
recent i have aquired a set ws19 mk3, uk production i think,
it has the withe scale voltmeter, it is receiving no problems there,
looking for the procedure to put it in transmit in cw, to see if it is working and puts out rf, before i do somethig stupid hi,it came with a nice home made power supply with metering, all voltages are present

Re: set ws19 transmit

The procedure as I recall it (read the manual is always good advice of course!) is to switch to CW mode, plug the key in, and put the key down.

As I recall, with the standard dynamotor power supply, the HT2 (490V PA supply) dynamotor starts when the key jack plug is pushed fully home. How your home made power supply works is something you will have to find out.......

ok richard thanks, with key plugged in its ready to transmit, power suply delivers all voltages, no dynamotor needed carlos on6cn

Re: set ws19 transmit

Carlos,

yes, I understand that you have a mains power supply - obviously the dynamotor is only relevant to the original 12V DC power units for the WS19.

So you have all the voltages. If you plug in a morse key and put the key down, you should be able to read power of somewhere between 2 to 5 watts on a standard 50 ohm power meter. Some say the WS19 can do 10W on CW, though I have not seen that myself.

If you don't have a power meter with a built-in load, then you can always use a HF SWR bridge type of meter, and feed its output into a resistor of around 50 to 100 ohms, and with enough power rating that it doesn't burn out.

Failing any power meter you could try a car bulb. I haven't tried it but I expect a 12V 5W car bulb (sidelights?) would be OK.

You won't need the variometer in any of these tests by the way. That's designed to match to capacitive loads like short rod aerials. As far as I remember the WS19 at its Pye socket output matches best into a load around 70 - 80 ohms, but to get some indication of RF power out, that doesn't matter.

good day richard,
all went well, tuning is simple , delivered 6 watts,
just as you said,
the power suply metering shows all voltages en has an audio pa and speaker built in,
all credit to the guy who made it,
the voltmeter was not working on the set 19, it was broken mentioned the seller,
this was not the case, it was simply oxidated,
interesting gear, advanced for its time, uhf,vhf and intercom all in one,
lots of electrolytes in it, im sure they seen the best time, but the unit is working and i leave it as it is, its nice to experience the performance of this set, i will connect it to my spectrum analyzer later on, i wonder the results in transmit hi, if all went well i included pics, carlos on6cn

Wow! There isn't much of a WS19 left, is there! The entire chassis appears to have been replaced, and the front panel only bears the remotest resemblance to a WS19. Is it a modern set designed to fit in the space where a WS19 would normally go?

Isn't that only the power supply ? Looks very nice.

Here's a picture of a WS19 Mk.III - the actual British production model - front view and inside. Sorry to have to tell you that your set might well be a very good transmitter - but it isn't remotely a WS19. All it appears to have is a few bits off a WS19 - the two Pye plugs, a meter (?) and.....(can't see much else).

I suspect what you have is someone's recreation of a valve transceiver, perhaps in the same form factor as a WS19, and with the Pye connectors, so it would connect to an original WS19 power supply and control harness. Whether they are wired up right or are just for show......???

A bonus is that it does look well made, judging by the construction I can see.

I like the PSU, will sit nicely next to a 19 set, probably not the very best to have pins with volts on them, but needs must and after all this isn't a toy for 5 year olds.

If it were "only the power supply" why does it have two Pye sockets, and a number of valves? And a loudspeaker?

hi,
yes thats the power supply only with an audio stage built in
all voltages needed rx an tx for the ws19 are present, one can control volume treble and tone from the ws19
this is not the ws19 of course

he used a chassis more or less the same of a ws19 chassis,

this the set richard set19 sits on the power supply and connected by the dogbone vertically, i post a pic later when they are connected together, im working on the audio pots with most be cleaned

Re: Wireless Set 19 Mk3 transmit.

That looks more like it! So the other box is effectively power supply plus audio system - hence the "bass" and "treble" controls.

You should be able to find a replacement WS19 meter without much problem if yours is broken.

i have taken the meter out and its not broken tested it by aplying tension with a resistor in series, its sprong to life, contacts were oxidated, pic is underneath chassis power supply
