Old Drydex Torch with Replica No 8 Battery and LED.
3 Attachment(s)
Recent threads prompted me to fix this old torch up. I made a No 8 battery using two N cells. As these would have a lower capacity than a pusser No 8, though being alkaline the difference may not be as great as it would first appear, I wanted them to last. I therefore soldered a 10mm white LED to an old MES base and used that as a lamp. As this is only working on 3V it is drawing a mere 30mA but is still plenty bright enough, ie painful to look at.

Great result!
Any series resistor to limit/control current through the LED? Graham |

The internal battery resistance will limit the current at that voltage.

No resistor. Those LEDs should have 3.4V so even with fresh alkaline cells it's below that. The rated current is 150mA but even at a fifth of that it gives well over half the light it would at full power; it's certainly as bright as a tungsten lamp would be.
