Well, there is a bit of free air inside the box. Given the size of the O/P TX that's there, a custom TX with some ordinary D- series valves would probably free up enough space to fit batteries in too, instead of hiding them in the cabinet it stands on. Using really small wire ended hearing aid types would save even more space, though output audio would be limited to maybe 50mW. Some ingenuity with capacitors could even see it mains powered!

The site is a bit of a dog's dinner, at least on my comuter, as it doesn't handle Japanese characters ... but take a look at the size of the 4-'tube' superhet .... astounding stuff.

I'm really impressed! Especially the 8-valve AM/FM radio (though it does have a couple of nasty g*rm*n**m diodes).

It does seem a shame to use solid state devices in that radio ... any radio, come to that ... a couple of GZ34s would have done nicely!

Thing about transistors, in my experience at least, is that they always blew and protected the fuses. And they wouldn't just wear out slowly like valves; they're a bit like pigs - they either go, or they don't.

But the level of miniaturisation by that Japanese gentleman is, in my eyes, nothing short of miraculous.

I wouldn't fancy repairing that! The underside of the chassis looks like the forlorn Saba that is awaiting repair...trouble is every time I poke the soldering iron in it comes out with a few polystyrene caps smoking away on the bit....
