Monarch Automatic Record Changer. Value?

3 Attachment(s)
Hi,

I am hoping someone can give me some information on a big old record player? - see photos attached. It is worth restoring and does it have much value? It has been used as a sideboard for years so doesn’t seem to be in too bad condition, comes with some documents and no longer has a plug, so don’t panic, I’m not going to plug it into the mains and blow it up! Haha!

Many thanks

Hello and welcome to the forums.

BSR Monarch refers just to the record player deck. The whole item is a radiogram and would have been made by someone like HMV. It would help if we knew the manufacturer and model number. It may be in the paper work or written on the back of the cabinet.

Ok, thank you. I’ll take a look and get back to you.

That document does not go with this player. The deck is a Garrard (RC110 or rc111) not a BSR. The gram is a COSSOR model 522 by the look of it.

You are wise not to plug it in. There are likely to be components which will go bang if you do. It also has the original GC2 cartridge fitted, which will likely e dead by now, and in any case is not usable on stereo records.

This is a nice unit, I would date it as mid 1950s (others will correct me here!) and more sought after than the later types. As to value, search for sold items in comparable (i.e. unrestored) conditions and similar vintage on ebay. HTH.

It's possible the deck has been changed and the documentation relates to that originally fitted.

Hi,
There's a 'sticky' thread at the top that's worth a read.

Nice bit of kit,though!
Cheers, Pete.

It's a Cossor radiogram from the mid 1950s.

It has FM so is very usable.

Value not huge but you might get £50 for it.

That's the same RM link I put in my post, Graham!

I don't think the deck has been changed. That RC110 is period-contemporary, and online pictures seem to show it in this 'gram. It is more likely that the paperwork was from another piece of equipment from the same owner, and stored conveniently inside the 'gram.

The Garrard deck is as specified by Cossor. It is an early FM model from mid-1955 and has two 8" Plessey speakers. This will sound very nice in good old Mono.
Regretfully this cannot be used for Stereo LPs unless the pick up cartridge is updated. Sadly, this may only have a value of £30.00 or so.
If you don't want it, best to sell Online or maybe on this Forum. Don't bin it!

Thank you all so much. You have been so helpful. Don’t worry, we won’t bin it, we may keep it for sentimental reasons as it was my great grandmother’s but if we think someone can get more enjoyment out of it, I’ll probably put it on here. Best wishes all

You could of course restore it or get it restored and enjoy it the same way your great grandparents used to.

Thank you. The family don’t want it but I think we should keep restore it. Problem is it won’t currently fit in my postage-stamp sized flat - I’m working on it. I don’t need a sofa right?!
