3mm sockets made from 4mm

2 Attachment(s)
I am making a power supply for a 1920s radio I am restoring. I have reported on progress on the radio on a separate post.

I have had difficulty in locating 3mm sockets for the wander plugs. I can get plenty of 4mm from ebay ones so decided to adapt them.

I purchased some thin wall 4mm od brass tube at my local craft shop and used it as a sleeve, fixing it in place with a small soldered joint.

The wander plugs fit perfectly.

Next time however I will solder them in place after fixing them to the chassis otherwise the solder will stop the nut being fitted....

Neat idea Peter - this has often cropped up and people mostly hunt around to try to find 2mm/3mm sockets, but this overcomes the problem.

As to soldering, if you clean and flux the brass tube before inserting it, then heat up the threaded portion of the socket (with the plastic part removed of course!) and apply solder to the junction of the tube & socket, the solder will be drawn into the socket wall by capillary attraction, leaving no external trace, just as it would an 'end feed' fitting on copper plumbing pipes & fitting. Solder wouldn't then obstruct the threads on the socket.

Hope that might help.

I was surprised to note that some of the 3mm (split pin type) wander plugs i got s/h recently were steel. By and large, the nickel plating was still good, only 1 rust spot to give it away. We plated things properly in those days, apparently.

Late production ones had plastic threaded ferrules too instead of decent metal ones.

You could make your own plugs

I have just taken delivery of some 3mm plugs and sockets from an ebay seller, they had to come from China and were described as "20 Pairs 3mm Male Female Banana Plug Golden Connector for RC Model ESC Motor".

The plugs fit the 4mm tube I used to sleeve the 4mm sockets.

I plan on finding some plastic tube to make the insulated part of the plug.

If you use suitable diameter rod rather than tube, you can drill holes just right for a nice tight interference fit. Or for quick'n'dirty use some coloured heatshrink.

The hardware's a nice find, too.
