Update on Ekco A22 reproduction radio.

Hi all, some may remember that I was able to reproduce a green AD65 outer casing in threads some time ago, well I said that I was going to attempt an Ekco A22 cabinet in the future, well it's well on the way and I have one not quite finished as yet and when it is I will post a picture or two, plan is to make a red, then a green, and possibly a white, it's been a long term project, but it's all coming together quite nice

Looking forward to the end result - the AD65 was spectacular!

This sounds most interesting! I'd love to have a go myself, I've got a spare A22 chassis in my storage unit gathering dust...

Regards,
Lloyd

I have been able to reproduce a couple of cabinets, for the Ekco A22 one in a Red colour and one in the Green colour, not quite finished still needs final polish and a good clean up

Nothing short of stunning!

Can't begin to imagine the work that went into creating the mould and casting the cabinet.

(Presumably male and female moulds too?).

Just need to create the innards now! :-)

It gladdens the heart to see such skill!

Fantastic reproductions, what's the material, how did you go about making the mould? This is very interesting coming from an avid Bakelite collector.

Very, very impressive indeed! There would certainly be a market for those cabinets if you could make enough to sell.

WOW!!! :o

They look absolutely stunning! I'll have to see if I can find that old chassis that's lurking in a corner of the storage unit...

Lloyd

Thanks for the positive replies , yes quite a few months to make moulds and the same with the cases, as with the exterior, the case interior has the same detail throughout , it has been extreamly time consuming and I have invested a sum of money into this project as you can imagine ,I have a chassis that I purchased a while ago so when the cabinets are completely finished I will fit to one of them, just not sure which one yet.. I will look for another chassis or two, as I would like a white one as well..I will post the end result, front ..side ..and rear pics

Hi,

What a fantastic result; you can be truly proud of your achievement; I'm most impressed. It's been asked before but what is the material; is it plastic injection?

Kind regards, Col.

Very nice job indeed well done.

I'll have a guess at a 2 part RTV silicone mould suspended in a fibreglass support mould and pigmented resin?

Cheers Neil

Re: Update on Ekco A22 reproduction radio.

No it's not injected, heat, pressure moulds are in multiple pieces and I use a combination of steel ,stone, plaster, wood, aluminium , tried many things and doing it this way works for me, I am sure others have tried and might have a better way but with the shapes of some radios and being able to reuse the mould, it works for me, the hard work starts when it out of the moulds, takes between 4-6 weeks, the mould for this took me around 7-10 months with all of the planning to do as well, not really cost effective, but it's passion and not always about the money, I have swapped other radio cases for international radios in the past, and probably loose money but my time gets taken up on planning and working out future moulds so don't have the time to chase hard to come by radios

I'm not at all aware of the technology, but I suppose that such reproduction cabinets could be made with 3D printing?
