Onyx telephone and regulator circuit

Hello forum,
I successfully converted an Onyx telephone for use on the British PSTN in 2007. The basic 700-type wiring was followed but the original transformer was retained. No attempt was made to fit the regulator circuit. On test the only problem found was that the volume was rather low. I resolved at the time to return to the circuit when I had a genuine 700-type replacement transformer. Happily this item is now on order, at long last!

My question: has anyone attempted to fit a 700-type regulator circuit to an Onyx telephone?

There is limited space available inside the onyx box but it might just be possible if the PCB was resigned or a bespoke daughter board fitted. This would be the ultimate modification to bring the ornate Italian telephone up to the standard of a British 700-type telephone.
