Grundig Satellit 650
 

Hi,
My question is:
Can I charge 6D rechargeable batteries inside my Grundig Satellit 650?
Does it have built-in charger for batteries like it has for optional dryfit accu?
Please help!

Hi Boris,

hifiengine.com has the factory service manual for your radio, you just need to sign up to be able to download it:

The radio has a built in charger based on the LM317 voltage stabilizer chip. It can be jumpered for 9.05V or for 9.35V output, depending what type of rechargeable battery you have in the radio.
There is a Si diode in series with the battery when it is charged, so the charging voltage on the battery would be less by about 0.6V from the jumpered voltage.
It is all in the schematics.

The correct battery to go in there is an 8volt Sonnenschein, Still available but quite expensive. Actually, the genuine Grundig version has an adaptor piece containing a fuse fitted on top, but it is easy to make a direct connection and add a bit of foan packing. I still have the proper plate for use in my Sat 600 (almost identical). My Nordmende Globtrotter 808 uses the same battery, but without the need for any adaptor plate.
About 18 months ago I bought two new of these batteries. It was cheaper to get them from Germany, but there was a problem with no facility to pay from here. However a helpful forum member domiciled there assisted me. I think it was around £100 for the two. NOT cheap (20 years ago I got loads for £2 each at rallies, they had been used in a GEC phone booth system which did not catch on.)
Next time batteries are needed (2 03 more years) I will investigate fitting lithiums (3.7v per cell, so two in series should work).

Once the radio is plugged in the batteries are being charged. No need to turn on the radio.

Hi Peter.

Does it mean that the radio charger can recognize rechargeable from ordinary alkaline batteries? We know that alkaline batteries can explode if charged.

The correct battery has its terminals on the end, and the radio has the battery termination such that 6 "D" cells will NOT be charged. However the correct battery WILL be charged. Just look carefully inside the battery "box" and you should understand.

Do you mean that "correct battery" is dryfit accu? Then 6 "D" rechargeable batteries can not be charged inside the radio.

Boris, let me clarify. The radio requires 6 off D cells for normal battery operation, or a Dryfit accumulator. The CORRECT one is a Grundig type 476. The 476 is a Sonnenschien 8v "accu" of 2 or 3AHr., but with an additional "L" shaped top cover which is connected to the spade terminals of the battery, and the shorter part of the "L" goes against the radio's battery spring connectors. This end part has a centre part that touches the CENTRE contact of the radio, providing the charge for the battery. If you fit the 6D cells instead, no connection is made to the centre charge terminal to prevent charging a standard battery.
Maybe you could find an old Grundig type 476, which would allow you to transfer the top to a correct Accu, which IS still available.
As I said before, just look in the battery compartment and it will all be quite clear.

Not impossible, it was designed to prevent charging standard batteries. You could obviously make a simple "get around" if you wanted to. Just study it and apply logic. Perhaps modify the TOP of one cell, and ensure that it is always at the charging terminal. At your risk not mine of course. I prefer the genuine Accu.
