Any IEEE Members out there?

I have a close friend who is currently researching family history and is a relative of Eric Payne [Marconi's Chief Electrical & Radio Engineer] - and he's just sent me a photo of Eric & Marconi on his yacht .... the 'Elettra'.

The IEEE have an archived article of Eric Payne's article - "The Radio Equipment of the Steam Yacht 'Elettra'" which my friend would dearly like a copy of - but it's a Pdf that can't be accessed by non-members.

Could anyone access this for me and send it to me via e-mail [which I'll supply via a PM]?

Many thanks in anticipation guys!

P.S. The IEEE link is: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/1666848/

Hi, you should also try the IET at Savoy place in London (The IET.org) as they will have access to the extensive Marconi collection which I believe was in the Bodleian at Oxford.

I have IEEE membership/access via work so I had a look today. If Terry's link doesn't work for you I can send you the IEEE pdf but it won't be until tomorrow now. The IEEE pdf was 6.5Mb in size and had about 19 pages copied from a book or article. The file is a bit big for using the wks email so I'll have to bring it home another way but this won't be until tomorrow.

I did also look at other IEEE links to Eric Payne docs and there are a few. Mostly letters to publications during the 1960s and 1970s. One of them was related to the Elettra yacht so I downloaded it from the IEEE site this afternoon.

This was quite a small doc so OK to email home so I can try and attach it to this post. It's only a brief letter to a magazine but it may be of interest. Eric's letter is the one in the PDF titled "Marconi Heritage".

I managed to bring the IEEE file home today and had a proper look at it.

I think quite a few forum members would find the photos and diagrams of Marconi's radio equipment (used on the yacht) to be quite interesting.

In case Terry's link doesn't work or if it requires membership I've uploaded the IEEE version of the pdf doc here:

https://www.qsl.net/g/g0hzu//RF%20Tr...0data/Marconi/

Hopefully the link will work OK and it's probably the same file as per Terry's link. It's fascinating stuff and I think it's definitely worth getting a cuppa and a few biscuits before reading it :)

Agreed, it's fascinating. Thank you for the link. Some of the details of 'Elettra' herself are equally interesting; burning 12 tons of coal a day!

Yep, same file and I didn't need to log in with the link I found.

Glad I wasn't the fireman (or whatever they're called) on the yacht!

"Stoker" in sea-going parlance...

Thanks from me too Jeremy.

A compelling and fascinating read. Very good of you to make it more widely accessible.

Thank you too!

What fun it must have been in those days - no spark transmitters, modulated oscillators, indeterminate frequency stability, no EMC regulations to comply with. Interesting mention of the door interlocks on the transmitter, which disconnect the HT and also short-circuit the capacitors (hopefully through a resistance to avoid contact sparking!).
