Goodmans One-Ten receiver
 

Hello
just found one of these British receivers with Scandinavian looks. It's not easy to find one of them in Italy.
Unfortunately, there are some faults - one output stage and the stereo decoder as far as I was able to detect.
I already know it's not easy, but in case anyone has got a schematics for it, it would be very useful...

Service manual as requested.

Mine is still going strong, bought second hand in 1973.
It was the demonstration model from the Goodmans factory, unusual in having a teak case with a black fascia.

I agree with Peter and here's why:
If you look at these you'll easily see the resemblance between a Ferguson and a Goodmans.

Furthermore the schematics are so alike that there's no question about it.Yes,there are different IF's and stereo decoders(due to technical advances I'm sure),but the HF and output stages are almost the same on the whole series of Ferguson(3481,3482,3483 and so on)and the Goodmans Module 80 and 90 and the One-Ten.

That's very interesting.

At the time, Goodmans was still a name associated with good-quality hifi equipment (these receivers were also available with built-in Goldring turntables with magnetic cartridges, for example), whereas Ferguson mainly made cheaper all-in-one equipment, invariably with a BSR autochanger and plasticy one-way speakers.

I once bought a Goodmans Module 80 (with Goldring GL75) at a jumble sale, with a pair of "BRC" speakers. I'd always assumed that the speakers were just "thrown in" by the man runnng the sale just to get rid of them, rather than actually supplied as part of the original system, but I now realise I might have been wrong. [BRC = British Radio Corporation, the owners of the Ferguson brand in the early 1970s].

Goodmans Loudspeakers Limited was part of the Radio Relay group which didn't merge with Torn until 1986.

This ties in with the 1963 catalogue here http://pagesperso-orange.fr/rififi/G...963-page20.jpg showing them as
'A Member of the Relay Exchanges Group' (and still at Wembley)

In the 70s I worked at Plessey at Westleigh which was close to the Downley Road site, and I can't remember any Thorn branding anywhere on the factory. With my memory this doesn't prove much.:)

I wonder if there is some confusion between 'Goodmans Loudspeakers Limited', and 'Goodmans Limited' which were separate firms.

I was the proud owner of a Goodmans 110 around 1974 and as a fiddler I had to have the lid off and tweak. I always remember the construction being very much like Ferguson/Thorn Tvs at the time with a lot of machine inserted components resistors and lockfit transistors. I have a memory that it was a Thorn product. I have just fished out my 1974 HiFi yearbook and on page 368 the Goodmans advert has a Thorn Group Logo in the bottom RH corner.
I think that confirms it was a Thorn product.

A positive review of the Goodmans 110 can be found at www.gramaphone.net in the December 72 on line edition page 191 onwards.

I still have a teak and silver version awaiting attention to a mains hum

Well worth restoring.

Well, since it was released in 1971, we can try to list the main competitors on the EU market at that time:

- B&O Beomaster 3000 (most obvious competitor)
- Philips 22RH790 (feather touch controls, very good sound)
- Grundig RTV 650 (less powerful, the best RF section)
- Sansui 1000X (classic, elegant, 30-35 WPC)
- Sony STR-6055 (so beautiful, great sound)
- Telefunken Concerto (cheaper but very good)

Do you see other (popular) competitors ?

Thanks Chris, I'd never even heard of the 150.

The Module 80 I referred to above was just like the one pictured, except deeper and with a Goldring GL75 built into its top, and a smoked Perspex lid with wooden end cheeks. Very good performer, but like all UK equipment of this vintage, the switches were dicey and the screen printing started to get tatty. Cost me £2 (c/w speakers) at the Scouts jumble, those were the days!

A few more pictures of the Goodmans 150.
It's claimed they were used by the BBC to monitor the quality of transmissions.
Can anyone confirm this?
Does anyone have any more details, specs etc?
