Ah - all topics usually gravitate to the CT200! They weren't in the same stadium, let alone ball park as the Hitachi or Sony.
The 8000 did have a reasonable picture for a while, but the CRT soon became tired and the PSU became toast. When launched they were heralded as the first sub-£200 colour TV but, as you say, this was dropped further.

Finally got the set up on the bench. The amount of dust in it was unreal, looks like the back was never off. I gave it a quick vacuum out and soon found the culprit. A 3.3uf 25v cap well past it. Stuck in a 4.7uf and a quick tweak and we're back in business.

Great sets, had a CNP-192 between '74-80. It never went wrong...
at all.

Working at a Hitachi dealer at the time, I did have the cap you've replaced fail a few times too. Black lines across the picture that flicker, worse on the high UHF ch's did turn out to be the tuner...

The field output transistor used to fail because of the small decoupler electrolytic caps in the output stage.

Towards the end of the sets life, we did have a few 'no colour' issues, again it was small caps in the decoder, never aligned one though!
