Automotive Posts - Rules and Enforcement

There have been quite a few posts lately trying to stretch boundaries when it comes to vehicles and engines (automotive). Some have been just blatantly against the rules. Moderators have tried to have a lighter touch on these rules recently, but this has simply resulted in more off topic posts.

After discussion amongst the moderators, it has been decided to go back to more strict interpretation of the rules. No asides, no trying to slip mentions of vehicles and engines into otherwise legitimate posts. This will be strictly enforced and if it is too much work to remove the vehicle references the whole post will be deleted.

The following areas of discussion are permitted:
  • In-car entertainment systems.
  • Electro-mechanical vehicle clocks (timepieces, not other vehicle instruments).
  • Vintage automotive test equipment such Crypton and Sun engine analysers, battery chargers, timing lamps etc (but not extending to their use with specific vehicles and not including modern fault code readers etc).
  • Outside broadcast vehicles, TV detector vans, branded dealer vans and similar, but only in relation to the equipment within the vehicles and not the vehicles themselves.
  • Stand-alone sat-nav systems (only in the Modern Technology section and not extended to built-in sat-navs).
  • Electrical polarity modifications to permitted equipment above (but not modifications to the vehicle electrical system).
Anything not covered in this list is not permitted.

When discussing the above permitted areas, it is generally not necessary to mention the specific vehicle. For car radios for example, unless the set is for a specific vehicle only and this fact is relevant to the discussion, then do not mention it at all.

We realise that there are a number of other areas that members may wish to discuss (such as lights, charging systems, immobilisers, keyfobs and entry systems etc). However, we feel that these are too far removed from the purpose of this forum. Instead, we have tried to focus on defining a clear boundary that can be easily understood and enforced.

If a thread requires knowledge of a particular brand and model of vehicle, then the discussion is better had on a forum that specialises in vehicles or vehicle electrical systems. If any members know of suitable well-run vehicle forums, please let one of the moderators know and we will add them here.

As noted above, going forward we will be enforcing this more thoroughly, and offending posts are likely to be drastically edited or just deleted. Persistent offenders may find their ability to post restricted. If your posts keep being removed or edited then please take the hint rather than trying to push things further.

Thank you,
Paul and the mod team.

Bumping yet again.

Discussions about cross ply tyres are completely irrelevant in these forums.

Bumping again.

This rule is repeatedly being broken by long term forum members who should know better and probably do.

Bumping this yet again.

If long term members who should know better continue to break this rule we'll have no option other than to ban them.
