No Edit Message in PM message editor?

After composing a reply to a PM from someone earlier and hitting 'submit', I realised I had made a glaring one-word error and went to edit it, just as the message editor here in the forums allows editing of messages for a limited amount of time for the same reason.

To my surprise I couldn't see the usual edit button so the error had to stay uncorrected. Is there never an edit button, even for a limited time, in the PM message editor?

You cannot modify a message once it's been sent.

Re: No Edit Message in PM message editor?

I had reasoned that as a 'sent' PM message was very likely to be held locally (within the forum structure) it might be possible to steam it open and correct it even after 'sending' it, as long as the recipient did not pick it up first.

Obviously not. I'll just have to take more care in future.

It is held locally, but the idea is that once the message is sent you no longer have control over it. It's normal for messaging systems to work like this.

Just as you can't (legally) retrieve a letter once you've posted it!

I am afraid sometimes emails are sent in error and the only way out is an apology if it indeed needed.

AOL used to have an 'unsend' option for e-mails but it has disappeared.

When I was working I think the email client (probably Outlook or OE) had a recall facility, providing it hadn't been read of course. I may be mistaken (I often am!)

On a MS Exchange system there is a facility to allow the recall of sent email, the recipient could have read it of course.
It causes problems when the email is sent to an external email system, users think they can recall it but unfortunately SMTP doesn't work like that, once it's gone from Exchange the control has been lost.
AOL problably could provide an unsend if the servers stored the mail for a while before sending or their servers were that slow that storing wouldn't be required.

It's not unusual for someone inside the Microsoft ecosystem to send an offensive email, 'recall' it, then be astonished when hundreds of angry responses come in. I once received an email from my local council with thousands of names and email addresses attached. When I replied pointing out that this wasn't very professional and probably contravened the Data Protection Act, the response was surprise that I could still see it because it had been 'recalled'.

There are quite a few stories out there where the "reply all" button has been pressed by mistake. Plenty of blushing has been done due to mistakes like this over the years.

My pet hate are those emails to a number of people and the sender not using BCC or the undisclosed recipient feature. If it's a small group of people who know each other I can accept that but not when it is a large group, many I don't know who they are.

Back to the adverts from Yahoo, are they relevant or just general. If they are related to things you have viewed while using Yahoo Mail it would seem that they track your browsing habits?

As the original question is answered and there have been several off-topic posts about email, it's time to close this.
