Anyone remember the Ferguson FV57H?

I looked online but no comments or forum postings so here goes.

At the Cash Converters I found this deck today, made in 1991, for £10. As it came with the remote and looked tidy I passed over the tenner and scarpered. Well the scarpering did not last long as it was quite heavy...

It is a HiFi model that inside looks a cross between a JVC and a Panasonic. Sort of like a G Deck but with a few JVC bits thrown in. It works but no HiFi sound - heads are fine under a loupe so I am suspecting the capacitors on the power supply (orderd up from Semtec). Bad capacitors in the Panasonic G deck machines kills the HiFi sound.

So anyone remember this deck? Is it a decent one?

All thoughts and input welcome.

I'm certain that it is a JVC sourced machine. by 1991 almost all Ferguson videos were made by Thomson but there were still a few special models made by JVC.

Thanks. I have replaced all capacitors in the PSU but still no hifi sound. Head is clean and produces a good picture but only linear mono sound.

Here is the machine: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vqg9lsjhicde7na/IMAG0019.jpg and https://www.dropbox.com/s/j6eoeqghtdlmays/IMAG0018.jpg

I don't suppose that there are any stock faults to check first are there?
Hope to get it running.

I might still have a manual for this model Ian, I am trying to think if one of JVC's infamous circuit protectors going O/C causes this fault, I will have a look for the manual later in the week.

Thank you - any help appreciated. I'm more up on Panasonic so this is new ground for me.

Hi
I have a vague recollection of some SMD electrolytics on the hi-fi board giving trouble, though I'm not sure it's on this machine. Yours is definitely a JVC, though, which is certainly a plus point!

Just an update. Amazingly the missing front flap was available from Hillsgrove Components and it has cheered the look of the machine up and inspired me to push on with repairs. The HiFi indicator is lit up until a tape is played then it goes out.

May I ask where the hifi board is located? I can at least take a look.

Sorry Ian my paper manuals end at FV54LX, I am fairly certain I had paper manuals up to at least the FV80 series, I have either misplaced them or they went the journey when I had a clearout a couple of years ago.

I will have another look if time permits.

The same here. There was a clear in the shop of video service manuals during the mid noughties. The belief was that nobody would ever want them. Looks like I got it wrong.
However, I'll keep up the search.

Thank you for the input - and please do keep an eye out for the manual.

I was looking over the various boards for obvious failed components but sadly found none. I'm not sure what to do next - its far too nice to discard. Is it too old to send to a repairer for paid repair?

An update for sake of completeness. No blown fuses, faulty capacitors or other easily noted faults seen so put back together and passed to the BHF to sell as a mono only machine. It was serviced with some new drive parts and the picture was very good so someone will be pleased.
