What determines if 'Edit' is available ?
I've noticed that sometimes I have the option to 'edit' my posts, but mostly not.
It doesn't seem related to a thread being 'closed', as obviously that would be locked. What does determine this functionallity ? Cheers, Buzby |
Re: What determines if 'Edit' is available ?
It's normally a timeout. People aren't allowed to edit or delete their posts after a certain time because it can render threads nonsensical.
Report a post or send a PM to a mod if you want to change an old post. |
Re: What determines if 'Edit' is available ?
The time is something between 15 minutes and an hour on most forums on the net.
I can't remember what we have it set to here but it is within that range. After it has timed out as above just ask a moderator politely for a late edit. |

See the attached screenshot from the admin system which shows the time limits here.
As Paul said, it is to prevent threads becoming nonsensical. For example by changing information after people have responded to the original version or, worse, by mellowing an argumentative post to make it appear as if the respondent started the argument. If you require an edit after the limit just click the red triangle to report the post to request it or PM a moderator. As long as the edit doesn't affect the flow of the thread we will do it. Of course information that was not apparent at the time of the post but was discovered by further investigation etc would belong in a follow-up post anyway. |
