Old widescreen CRT what do you think

I hope this is the right category.
My partners son likes to play old videos and video games.
He currently has a old phillips 28 inch wide screen crt . With fantastic picture.
He’s been offered a free early plasma tv with no HD .
I’m trying to convince him to stick with what he’s got the Philips . He also has the tv on for several hours. So running cost could be hi.
Could I have a second opinion just to convince him I’m right .

I would stick with the Philips CRT, it uses a lot less power than the horrible Plasma set does. As the Plasma is not HD the definition of the Philips will probably be better.
The Plasma also puts out a lot of noise and interference.
Going back to mains consumption The Philips CRT set would probably be rated at under 100w possibly as low as 70w wheras the Plasma set can use up to 400-500w and needs fans to keep them cool.
I would not allow a plasma set in my house, stick to the Philips CRT even though its approaching vintage its the better bet.

Retro games enthusiasts prefer CRTs to modern display technologies.

Google 'CRT gaming' for articles such as this which explain why games produced in the CRT era look and play better on them.

Being a retro gamer myself I would 100% stick with a decent CRT set.
Although I do retro game on a LED tv too , I find there are lots of compatibility problems with various systems and some just wont work at all.

Also for instance light guns wont work on LCD LED tvs from the 8/16 bit era (at least none of mine do)

Games from before the PS3 era are normally designed to display in 4:3 and will look odd on any sort of 16:9 display.

Indeed, in my experience, even the 4:3 mode on an average 16:9 CRT is not always that 'clean' looking. You can tweak the geometry all you like - often to the detriment of the widescreen display mode(s)!

Re: Old widescreen CRT what do you think

The old plasma may have a very unuseful native resolution depending on the exact model, so I too would say a CRT is probably best. If the picture is too small on a widescreen set, try a 4:3 set instead.
