Hello All,
getting bored vegetating. Not a quiz, this is for my own satisfaction. Which manufacturer did a set that enabled you to watch text at the side of the normal picture as opposed to super imposing it over the picture. Been in the trade all my adult life but it's leaving me vacant. It was one of the last crt chassis they produced. All I remember is the manufacturer came and gave us a demo on how to repair the things, they replaced the optos in the psu, put one in the wrong way round and blew the psu. It could have been either Sharp, Toshiba, Sony or LG. I worked for them all.

Diddnt Sanyo produce something like that within their PIP (Picture in Picture) set series?

From memory I think Philips was the first to do this, not sure whether it was the A10 chassis or B4.

I'm sure more than one brand did this, but at least Philips. Possibly already in the GFL chassis mid to late 1990's but surely in the MG chassis series.

Edit after reading last post above: In 100Hz chassis this is relatively simple, I'm not sure about 50Hz chassis but the painter chip in the A10 was reasonably powerfulfor its time.

I'm also sure that Sony did this, so that might be the one you remember.

I remember the picture-in-picture thing: my parents went to a Suffolk holiday-cottage where the TV had this feature and they managed to enable it then couldn't work out how to turn it off!

Of course phoning me for assistance turned out to not be that useful given that I couldn't see all the buttons available on the remote or the on-screen messages.

The painter chip in the A10 was horrific with all the odd ball faults it caused,the most common was switching off.

ITT/Nokia did a set with that feature, I am pretty sure there was a Blaupunkt too.

I got a bonus from work back in 2002 and decided to replace my long-in-the-tooth ex-rental Ferguson telly and future-proof myself with something with inbuilt Digital tuner.

I eventually went for a 28" widescreen CRT Sony Wega, but was very tempted by the similar-sized LG on display in Currys. Instead of the traditional Picture/Text/Mix facility, the LG did Full-screen Picture, Full-screen Text, or text and picture side-by-side.

Too long ago to remember the model number though.

Those incredible ITT Digivision sets.

The Salora M, which shared a lot in common (chip set wise) with the Digivision, had it as well.

I think the Phillips widescreen set my brother used to have could display text alongside the picture.

I had a Loewe that various options for text, one of these was to have the text alongside the picture. That was an expensive 100 hz set.

Thanks all, I wasn't aware so many sets did this, Sharp introduced a chassis. The DA100, models were in sizes from 24-36 inch w\s. FW sets were w\s and GF's were flat, still w\s. We did very well with them, they replaced the horrible GS sets. When I posted my original query regarding which set it could have been I must have been having a bad moment. But thank you, pleasant finding out other sets did it too. Class D output stages were new to us then, soon got those tamed.
