Marine Band LF Receiver.
 

Back in 1975 Practical Wireless published a circuit for a low frequency marine band receiver.

I was wondering if anyone here had built this set.

If so, was it a success ?

Unless you have the specified Denco coils, its construction could be problematic.

I built the Hythe Marine Band Receiver from 1979 and it was really good! Spent hours listening to it with 6ft of random wire in my kitchen!

Yes, that is the one.

It is the coils that are indeed the problem. I'm hoping Jim Jobe is still around as he was offering info on winding your own Denco replacements. I have PMd him my Email. If Jim is no longer on the site, does anyone else have a copy of his coil winding information ?

I see that you were talking about two different radios.
I do mean the Heath version.

Mind you, these days on the marine bands there won't be a lot to listen to! The old MF band is long gone (1999?) - that went from 410kHz to 512kHz and was MCW but most operators switched their receivers to CW. Then the beacon band went from about 240kHz to again 410kHz - nowadays the marine beacons have just about gone and the aeronautical beacons are on their way too. Looking at the schematic of that PW receiver though it looks like it would make a very good MW band DX receiver!

It does seem that these coils are really going to be a pain in the neck.
I vaguely remember that Practical Wireless published a circuit for a high performance Medium Wave receiver. Maybe I'll look it up.

Thanks for the link! Pages 26-31 are the corresponding ones for the PDF doc.

They sign-off noting a follow-up on alignment in the subsequent edition.
