Colin,

As you'll see on the first page of the thread, your meter was made in November 1958, so it wasn't very old when you got it. The £12 repair was about half the new cost in the 1960s.

In our test department at work there is a model 7 gathering dust. Serial number 01612 7/3/77

I'm not 100% sure about the last 7 as it is partially rubbed off.

Hi SPCh. I'm a newbie to this forum, I came accross it while googling for info on a Model 7 Avometer that has just been given to me. It has this serial number on the bottom RH side of the scale 7XXXX-A-557. It has a black Bakelite face & battery cover, a hammertone gold painted body & a gold instruction plate screwed to the back which also bears the model & patent numbers. It also has the 1, 1.5, 2 & the W hand printed in red on the power scale. It seems in very good condition & the only deviations from standard are the probes & a modified battery compartment - A "C" cell & holder plus a 9volt battery connector soldered onto the appropriate tabs that would have serviced the 2 x 4.5 volt batteries. Also, it has a decal on it stating it was sold by the Australian agent Electrical Equipment of Australia Ltd. 75 Liverpool St, Sydney.

I've had about 8 in the last 2 years, including a AM one from the WW2 period.

Currently I have a lovely model 7 in excellent condition which nobody wants ...it's number is 21669-A-251

I have an AVO 8 MkIII.

Serial number; 89672 1268

This would indicate a production date of December 1968.

As I now know; the MkIII was introduced in 1964 and the MkIV in 1968, so my MkIII must have been a very late one.

Avo 8 MkV bought on ebay last year :-), so serial number is: 0xxxx 8V/4/77. Told it was a college sale. Great meter, great condition, great buy.

When I was apprenticed to EKCO in Glasgow I bought a wee Avominor. A while later it got nicked :'( >((. Wish I could remember the serial number!

Hi,
I have aquired a Universal Avominor - the number appears to be 48547/742. There is another reference on the back stating - Type H and REF.10S/46.
I hope this is of assistance to you.

Please can anyone advise me where I may obtain a 1.5 battery of the correct size etc to operate this meter or an alternative battery.

Thanks for the input.

I'm afraid they don't sell that battery type any more. It's the old U10 "Standard" battery, but I believe the 1289 "FLAT" battery (the one with two prongs on top) is built up from three of them. Alternatively, you can use a normal AA battery, fattened up by wrapping paper round it, and "extended" by a metallic packing-piece (a piece of volume control spindle has been known to serve).

I saw this Forum on researching my newly aquired (Ebay) AVO Model 8 MkV meter, I have a few DMM but still like to see trends in my metering rather than constant digital confusion.
But working out it serial number compared to every one else has me confused, maybe it been back for major repairs so here is mine. ???

This number is taken from the RH side casing and from inside the battery compartment.
Question - do you have From/To dates of manufacture for the Model 8
I also note the front appears to use only 3 screws for fixing, as well as that the trick of using two PP3 and 5v zener diode seems impossible in the space provided for the BLR121 battery (off the Maplins then).

The serial number looks right enough, apart perhaps for the preceding two letters and the missing date. I presume these numbers are on twin labels, one at top centre of the RH side of the case, and one in the battery compartment below the BLR121. The serial number is typically five digits followed by space 8V (=Model 8 Mark 5) then the date as /m/yy.

The AVO history is poorly documented (despite the attempts of a few of us to improve it) so it is not possible to simply look up the date of any given serial-numbered unit. That is essentially the point of the present survey.

Even with the generous response to date, it has not been possible to populate a comprehensive list yet - it's still very patchy.

Hi I have a model 7 number 463-a-1147 which I picked up cheap from a boot sale( £5.00).
Unfortunately it now has a sticking needle.
I will have to get round to sorting it out.

Hi,

I can contribute two models to your survey:

AVO 7 Serial # 37466 7/3/71
and
AVO 8 Mk3 Serial 27691 . 1065

Both these meters are nearly mint condition, the AVO 8 has some of the white marking paint flaking off. I would be interested in knowing the easiest practical way to repaint these markings, suppose a toothpick & white enamel paint should do it?
