I was given the heads up about this sale this morning.
Its on Saturday in Campsea Ashe (rural Suffolk) and can be seen on "the saleroom .com"

738 is a Hallicrafters and what looks to be a relatively untouched R1155 bids already over double the auctioneer's estimate.

There are a few lots that might not go for much but could yield spare parts. It looks like one of the R1155s has come to someone's attention the other hasn't lifted off yet.

There will be some frantic bidding for certain trendy items in there, and i note there are a lot of estimates that are very much on the low side. (No defamation intended, just an observation- more interest is generated if they err on the low side- it's just the way it is.)

It's just that our sort of items are far outside most auction houses fields of expertise. They've built up knowledge in areas where they get much greater turnover and where there is more money for them to make. The specialist auctions where the Beau Deccas and the pre-war tellies make an appearance are indeed specialist.

But it comes out fair in the end. The prices settle at whatever those who attend are prepared to pay. The auctioneers estimates are only guides, and only for those with no knowledge of whatever field.

Still, it's interesting to observe what values others outside our fields place on our stuff...

The photo appears to show damage to the tuning scale..a hot spot above the tuning knob...dial lamp maybe?

Yep I used to work in the auction trade and it was standard practice to underestimate items. Makes the sellers happy when the item goes for more than expected, and buyers think they might get a bargain.

All done and dusted.

No great surprises - little interest in domestic radios, little interest in most test gear apart from valve testers, which for some reason, many seem to want to own. (Lot 897 - Taylor 45C £140). Lot 895 TEK 485 dual trace 350 MHz scope £2.00. Marconi TF1313A Bridge £20. The EC10 made just £35.

Overall, given that as with so many auctions these day, live bidding on internet was possible, the prices attained for most lots seem quite low to me, but then there is the buyer’s premium and VAT, and the cost/hassle of getting it home by one means or another. Too many old timers or their next of kin disposing with too much old tat to too few buyers in a declining market I guess.

I suppose that's how most people would sum up this forum!

One man's tat is another man's treasure.

Great if you're at an auction and you're the only one who wants something. A 350MHz Tek scope for two quid must have made someone happy.

Although sadly I didn't win any of the five lots I bid on. Maybe I am out of touch with my values. I didn't bid on any of the test equipment but did bid on a few of the radios and the Bush TV. The latter sold for a similar amount to what I sold my fully restored one for a year or so ago (and regretted it ever since).

I was considering a bridge, but the cost of delivery and the premiums etc. meant I couldn't afford it really. I think going to Suffolk and back for a £20 bargain could easily be a false economy!
