I recently acquired this radio and a search on this site for any threads or service info on it turned up nothing so I thought I would post on here as I thought it might be of some interest.

I was given this yesterday (for free) by a nice old boy who I do a bit of work for now and again, it had been in his loft for around 40 years till a couple of days ago. It appears to be complete apart from a bright missing on the on/off switch. I’m not really into valve radios due to the high voltages and the crammed in components but I was taken by its compact size, good looks, 3 speakers and a good selection of wavebands. I haven’t powered it up but the chap assured me it worked well before they moved to their current location deep in a mining valley near me. Being so low in a valley the radio wouldn’t pick anything up so was redundant and ended up in the loft.

I plan to have a go at this after Christmas but in the mean time I will try to source as much service info etc. as I possibly can, so will put a request for some service info other than a schematic in the wanted section. Some pics below..

Google "Govette 8U radio schematic" and you will find what you need in images and then just Google "Telefunken Govette" for Phil's Old Radios take on the similar model 9 .

A nice well build radio, it is fairly conventional. Similar to the Grundig 2066. It has an ECC85 double triode VHF FM tuner between 87.5 to 100MHz so not getting to the top end of 108MHz.

It has a full wave solid state bridge rectifier instead of a valve rectifier, a B250 C75 N2, this a selenium type.

Valve line up ECC85, ECH81, EF89, EABC80,EL84 and EM80 tuning indicator. Should be straight forward to work on.

A silicon bridge rectifier 2 Amp 240V and a 100 Ohm 5 Watt resistor in series can replace the selinium bridge rectifier for better reliability.

Thanks for the help on the info Chris, I was typing in my specific model on Google and not getting much at all however your suggestion has helped find the help/info I am going to need.

Bit disappointing that it only goes up to 100MHz Geoff, but I think I can live with that, I can still pick up radio 1 though:devil: I am actually looking forward to having a go at this.:)

Reading up on these radios it seems they are excellent performers and quite soughtafter, so I am a little disappointed that there is so little interest in this:(, perhaps I should have said I wanted to Bluetooth it or play my guitar through it..

it is an excellent radio.

Wait, till you see its shortwave fine-tune in operation!

Do never say things like 'bluetooth it', 'play my guitar through it', because they hurt a radio's feelings...

No I wouldn't do that to any of my stuff, unfortunately it seems to get pulses racing on here :shrug:
I saw a video on youtube late 1 night showing that sw fine tuning in operation, very clever.
