Melody maker 494AC. Dial cord threading.

Hi, I am sure this is a simple question. I am more into restoring arcade machines than radios so please ignore my ignorance !
This is a radio I am trying to do up after my relative died.
Moving it with my fingers manually it does all work !!

I have tried to help myself by reading this post

https://vintage-radio.net/forum/showthread.php?t=137734

and looking at some YouTube videos

Basically I think the cord is broke assume it should be in one piece !!

I have worked out the spring goes in the wheel thing and roughly how it travels.

I have not got a replacement cord yet and some suggest fishing wire.

However for the life of me I cant work out how you connect the cord to the knob you turn round as no screw or hole to put it in. Hows it work. Said it would be simple. Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the forums.

You'll find the info you need here:-

https://www.service-data.com/product...68/1369/t11068

Basically the cord is wrapped 2 1/4 times round the tuning control shaft.

Thanks station X , its literally that simple then !

That will be useful for Valve info too.

My dad is a TV engineer and my grandad used to like old radios so will grab some fuses next time I am home, based on diagram.

Nice to see service diagram for some old arcade monitors it can be pain to find them.

Right I see you have a couple of really useful guides.

So will order some cord:

And clean the Chassis.

Thanks I ordered some cord of ebay and using the diagram managed to work it out.
Took me an hour to fit.
I guess its all in the technique. I originally tied one end to spring, went all way round, but trying to tie other end to spring again was near impossible.
So made the cord equal length and put through the spring then tied ends like a shoelace but into knots and cut of excess. All done and tuning works fine now.

Picture shows this

Which I turned into this
Attachment 183681

Re: Melody maker 494AC. Dial cord threading.

The cord route shown in the Trader sheet is correct, but the position of the drum as shown in the Trader sheet doesn't look to be the best position for securing the cord to the spring, it might be easier with the tuning gang set to its minimum capacitance when fitting a replacement cord.

Lawrence.
