Looking for info on Telonic 1232A Sweep Generator

Hi, I managed to snag myself a Telonic 1232A sweep generator recently at a reasonable price. The previous owner has no information on the unit and a trawl through the web has come up with nothing. It's almost certainly a 120mhz unit, but other than that, nothing. It's currently in transit so I can't assess it's condition but it switches on and produces some kind of signal according to the seller.

I emailed Telonic UK and they have no information and I'm waiting on Telonic US to respond, but I'm not hopeful.

Does anyone know anything about this unit?

Re: Looking for info on Telonic 1232A Sweep Generator

I suggest you search this Forum for previous postings on Telonic Sweep generators. July 2015 and July 2011 et al.
I see I posted the manual for the 1204-1234, which I got from the manufac turers in 1996. They were most helpful then. Also the 1205. These models all seem very much the same, built up with separate modules for the various ranges. You may also get ideas from the Wavetek 2000 series, which seem so similar that I wonder if one is derived from the other. I suspect your 1232 is an earlier version of the 1234. Does it cover the same range 0 - 500Mhz.

Hi Bill, I searched for the 1234 manual you said you posted, but came up blank. I had seen the Telonic threads earlier (including the one you mentioned: https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=71151) but I didn't see any manuals or circuit diagrams. Are documents posted within threads or somewhere else?

It's interesting you should mention wavetek, as I was recently looking at the circuit diagram for a 1062 (https://doc.xdevs.com/doc/Wavetek/WA...nstruction.pdf). I was keeping an eye out for a wavetek, but they don't seem as common this side of the pond.

Telonic 1204- 1234 sweeper.
The reason you did not see any manuals posted is because they are too large to post on the Forum, which sets a limit of about 1.9Mb for pdf, and much smaller for other formats.
Larger files have to be routed through the use of an email, which do not show on the Forum. I attach the circuits for you. wme_bill.

Very kind of you Bill. Thank you very much! If I have any luck getting any documentation from Telonic Berkeley I'll post it up.

Re: Looking for info on Telonic 1232A Sweep Generator

Quick update on the request for documentation about the 1232A and 12XX. Both Telonic UK and Telonic Berkeley have come back saying they don't have any information on these sweep generators.

@WME_bill, I don't suppose you have the operational part of the 1204/1234A manual? I need to make sure I understand the function set to test this unit out completely.

Re: Looking for info on Telonic 1232A Sweep Generator

Telonic 1204 - 1234 manual.
The manual which I got from them I think in 1996 contains the specification as section1 and then Section 6, with board layouts, parts lists and circuit diagrams.
No functional description, though it seems fairly straightforward to understand.
I'll let you have a copy if you send your email address.
This instrument is extraordinarily similar to the Wavetek 2000 or 2001 Sweepers, for which the manual does include Operating instructions, Circuit Description and Maintenance. A machine which suffers from short circuited tantalum decoupling capacitors. Mine always seems to need another one replacing.
I know, I must do them all, but it is a laborious job opening up all the separate screened modules. So I have lazily just done the faulty one and got on with the main alignment tasks for which I was intending to use it. That manual is too large to post on the forum, but I could scan it for you onto a CD at nominal cost and post (mail) it if you want it. wme_bill m0wpn

Thanks once again Bill. I gave it a quick test before packaging it up again for placing under the tree (kids are keen to make sure I'm not left out around Christmas!) I'll have a proper look later, but I noticed a few things during that quick test.

Firstly, I didn't see a vertical output jack (see attached image). Then I couldn't find a way to reduce the sweep width to zero and I'm not sure this is possible (i.e., make it produce a steady sine wave). Lastly, even at the lower range (20mhz) the signal on the scope (taken from the RF Output jack) wasn't quite what I was expecting. It seemed a little jittery and I wasn't sure if that was a triggering issue or some other operator error. These are the kind of issues that a quick glance at a user guide would shed some light on.

With regard to reducing the sweep width to zero, have you tried setting the 'Sweep Mode' switch to 'EXT/CW'?

Re: Looking for info on Telonic 1232A Sweep Generator

Hi Ron,

I thought I did, but perhaps not. Of course, the CW sweep mode would make sense. I'm not sure what the alternative EXT mode does? At a guess it selects an external sweep signal, which would make sense as this would be mutually exclusive to a constant wave output.

Also, I'm guessing now that this unit doesn't have a rectifier and vertical output (unlike many of the wavetek units). So, would I be correct in thinking that you need to construct (or purchase) your own rectifier to use as the Y input to the scope?

Also, does anyone know what ALC stands for? On the back of the unit is an ALC switch (INT or EXT) and an ALC EXT jack. I'm guessing level control, but I'm not sure.

Finally, I was hoping the documentation would tell me if this had a 75 or 50 ohm output impedance (I'm guessing 75 ohm). If anyone knows more or has a simple method of figuring this out, I'd be grateful.

Regards. D.

Re: Looking for info on Telonic 1232A Sweep Generator

Please find, ca in the midle part of site, usable description of Telonic 1232A` s control elements.
Because its a "TV Generator", I don`t think that a part of IOs has 50 Ohm impedance.
BTW, you can search for Telonic, Berkeley or Altair 1232-A too...

Re: Looking for info on Telonic 1232A Sweep Generator

Thankyou kindly karesz, that's answered many of my questions. Clearly, your search abilities are far superior to mine! I tried a few of the search terms you suggested but they didn't turn up anything new (that I could see).

A diode probe can be easily made with a few components and a germanium diode. There is a Forum thread on the Heathkit HFW-1 wobbulator that shows an example proposed by Roberts Radio for aligning the R700.

Re: Looking for info on Telonic 1232A Sweep Generator

Thanks Peter, pieces coming together nicely. With all the info I've received, I should have enough to perform some proper tests later. Actually, the document provided by karesz was a real gem. The link provided is actually a text format of the original uploaded pdf document (https://ia801901.us.archive.org/6/it...dout-Ni305.pdf) complete with images and test procedures. Great stuff.

Yes indeed Ron, shouldn't be a problem - in fact I made something very much like it recently. Regards.
