Composite video from HDMI port

Thought I would try this whilst my pasties were in the oven.

As we all know a well known good source of old programmes like Steptoe, On the busses etc can be found on youtube etc. So I thought of streaming in into either a UHF modulator or aurora for 405 lines. I found a box of tricks for no money and it seems to work reasonably well, the PC screen looks awful on a 10 inch UHF BW portable however video looks good.

Gadget is a MINI HDMI2AV switchable from ntsc and pal with a comp video IP and stereo audio IP's. Plugged it into the HDMI port on my laptop and it worked straight out of the box !

I doubt this is original in any way and apologies if its old news just though I would share it.

I've got one of those...its awaiting being cracked open to see what it inside and if there is any chance of hacking to make 405 lines...

Re: Composite video from HDMI port

I finally got round to locating the thing and popping the lid off last night. It appears to contain 4 major components for video.

- An anonymous micrcontroller
- An EPROM containing the HDMI decryption keys
- A EP9351 which decodes HDMI serial into 3x8 bit parallel data
- A MDIN 165 digital to analogue video encoder chip.

If I get round to it I may try soldering a load of tiny wires to the pins of the EP9351 and hijack the data as it goes by and feed it to an FPGA.

THE MDIN 165 seems to be the chip that does all the heavy lifting in terms of encoding but I can't find a full datasheet for it - it would be great if that could be persuaded to do the 405 linedness!

I also received one in the post on Monday. Purchased from Aliexpress for the price of a pint. Great little device.

Hello Peter (post 8)

I haven't got one of these but one of the user reviews at this Amazon page seems to be using theirs with Fire TV unit if that's any help.
