ITT 580 (Philips VR2022 clone) V2000 problems
 

Hello all.
Recently acquired the above mentioned ITT 580 V2000 machine, which has had one careful owner (until now!) since purchased new in 1983.
Was informed that it had been in storage since 1995, and upon powering up by the owner, it worked fine. Then on the second attempt a day later, it worked for a short while and then shut down, with the tape still laced up.
The problem to begin with is that the two components which take the tape out of the cassette into the laced up position, seem to be jammed in that position (indicated by the arrows in the attached photo), and when switched on at the mains, the horizontal mechanism at the top of the picture tries to either disengage or un-jam itself, but cannot. After a few seconds, machine goes into standby, and will not come out of standby, nor will any of the function buttons operate. The clock does keep adding time as it should however.
Internally, this is very clean, and there appears to be no PCB damage, and no leaking components. The wire which drives the lacing mechanism is also intact and has tension, although I cannot determine if it is threaded correctly through the moving parts (eg. pinch roller part indicated by green arrow).
Any information on how to proceed with any checking and repairing would be greatly appreciated. This is a very beautiful machine, and time is not an issue.

ITT 580 now playing, but...
 

After finally sitting down to 'have a go', managed to manually rewind the mechanism shown in the picture above, to it's starting position.
Plugged in, allowed to warm up, inserted tape, pressed play, tape threaded as it should, PICTURE PERFECT!
But, on pressing STOP, after a few seconds, machine shuts down without unthreading tape.
Can anyone tell me if this a switch/sensor problem, and where best to start? ???

There is a NiCd battery on the control logic board. It's gone short circuit, will have leaked or at the very least outgassed, and might cause all sorts of erroneous operation.

Thanks, Maarten. I will replace that before trying the machine again with another tape. Have been advised by the wonderful 8-/ Colin McCormick to also check whether the loading motor is receiving a voltage when stop is pressed.

Hi Phil.

Not that I can be terribly specific but the relays in these 1st/2nd generation (depending on how you look at it) V2000 machines were often a little bit ropey and often times a good clean with a bit of servisol would sort them out. I seem to recall that the clear plastic lids could be unclipped fairly easily. The control logic in these machines is fairly, er, logical :) too but actually getting to the boards without extender cards can be all but impossible.

Thanks, Mike. Going to have a look at it again at the weekend, by which time I should have a Philips VR2022 also, so may be able to compare and contrast what each machine is doing, as the wonderful palsite says that the 2022 and the 580 are basically exactly the same.
Slightly frustrating, as when the tapes play, the picture and sound is stunning, with an absolutely still freeze frame.

Lovely picture with the V2000 format, had a 2020 and a 2022 many moons ago;- knocked the pants off VHS at the time.(early 1980's) 73's Alyn G1TBL
