Staple gun's staples for fitting speaker cloth
 

I use a Rexel 2001 staple gun for pinning speaker cloth to baffles. Having run out of staples I'm having a devil of game trying to find replacement staples. The machine clearly states what staples it uses: Rexel 2001/ (6mm depth) and 2001/8 (8mm depth). There's lots of anecdotal information on the internet but nowhere can I find that staple o ra definitive replacement for that staple - if it's no longer made. Staples are quite expensive, so obviously I don't want to take a stab at something to find it's only of use to throw in the bin. Can anyone help with info? My preference is for the 6mm depth size as it goes easier into the wooden baffle and it's all that's needed to hold the cloth in place. Yes I know I can use glue instead of staples. Thanks!

I think you can get these staples by alternative makers. Often staples are sold by size so as an example a 12mm wide by 6mm length will be listed as 12/6. Hope that helps.

Mick, I wish I knew, I don't have any. I can measure the size of the carriage in which the staples fit.

Understandable that the chap who asked hasn't signalled his agreement, since the information wasn't posted until three and a half years after he left his question. There seems to be a Fischer-Darex A6 too, presumably 6mm to the A8's 8mm, but not nearly so readily available.

I'm only familiar with staplers for paper: I had a stroke of luck not long ago when a few refills turned up on this side of the broad Atlantic for my vintage Bates Model B, an ingenious device that cuts and forms its own staples from a reel of brass wire.

Thanks Paul but that's one of the many unconfirmed 'dead ends' thrown up by google that I've already seen, hence my request for a definitive source/answer. But thanks for thinking of me.

I was hoping someone was using the 2001 and could help me out.

Most staples are 1/2" wide. It's only the length of the legs that differs and these are generally specified in millimetres. Long legged staples are made from heavier gauge material.

I used to by my staples from Staples, but now I go to Ryman. DIY outlets may stock staples for staple guns.

Many staple guns (rather than staplers) use 10mm (or 3/8") staples and these are readily available (e.g. Screwfix). I'm assuming that these don't fit your Rexel.

It should be easy to measure the width of the carriage, or rather the spring loaded part of the carriage that pushes the staples forwards - it should match the required staples.

Yes, measure the width of the carriage. Assuming it's a heavy duty 'tacker' pressed against the work, rather than a desktop stapler pressed against the desk, you'll find a wide variety available. I had the same problem with my ancient Arrow tacker I acquired, and ended up being able to get some from the hardware shop in town for £4 or so, after a couple of false starts.

If you can't find any in a small enough quantity, or cheaply enough to be worth taking a risk, and no-one will let you test, then e-mail Rexel. I can't think that your one uses such a bizarre type of staple that it's totally different from current production. My Arrow uses some no-name Toolstation brand just as well, as the measurements are the same despite having totally different identifying numbers.

I doubt if you'll find a definitive answer to this surprisingly complex issue although asking Rexel may be worth a try. Failing that if the stapler looks anything like their current range of 'tackers' it would probably be worth taking a punt on Rexel 23/6 staples.

Well, full marks to Rexel for getting back to me quickly, but why the hell did they change the name from 2001/6 to 200/6 and create the problem of nothing coming up when searching for 2001/6?! Here's the email:

Interesting that they give the dimensions of the box and state that the staples have 6mm legs. What's not stated is the width across the top of the staple which I assume is 1/2" or 12.7mm?

I have a Rawlplugs(?) stapler, which takes 140/6-8. These are available from Screwfix. You are welcome to have a strip to try. They are 10mm (ish) wide and 6mm deep.

The T2001/8mm staples are approx 10.5mm wide according to my ruler.

Well according to screwfix, the 140 series are 10.6mm, so most likely the same size. Apparently 140, T50 and G series are all the same.

I've ordered the Rexel ones off Ebay. Not hard when you have the correct name for the staples!

I recall measuring the outer width of the staple carriage and it's just under 11mm, so it seems anything around the 10.5mm mark would fit.
