Pye T470 Transmitter
 

Hi peeps.... Bought a Pye T470.... so it says on the rating label also the o/p rf is 462.7 Mhz......
Obviously VHF exciter into a tripler..... Xtal removed.. I guess its FM..
Any info please ??? only cost a quid...
no google returns for it...

Probably the Tx from the Pye F470 base station, which was probably the successor to the F460, widely used by the police.

I found just one Google result for the F470!

Hi Peeps... Just to add further info.. 2 photo's..

I removed the bandpass filter and it was tuned to 156 Mhz... now retuned to 144-146 Mhz.

But it would be nice to see a schematic.

Our county ambulance service used them in the 70s and 80s. The model pictured looks like tx part of the L470 link series. They were so reliable, powered on tx 24/7. Most problems were the control room end or landline problems. Sorry, disposed of my manuals years ago.

I remember working on these when they were used on low band AM VHF main sites as point to point links but they were definitely VHF high band FM on around 154MHz. Unless I am confusing them with a similar model. It's a long time ago and a lot of Pye equipment had similar panel designs. The ones I looked after had a link receiver next to them in the rack and worked as a pair. I remember a mod coming out from our HQ to replace the power indicator lamp with an LED, to save changing the bulb when it failed.

Alan, I seem to recall a vhf version, the L150? Used only by the Home office I imagine. Which would be what you mean.
The L470 was designed as a link tx-rx, UHF only.. Also the F460 and F461 were UHF base stations.

It will be very similar to T150.
I seem to recall an issue with mains hum which involved supply/ground or AF cable for the modulator being routed a half turn around the mains transformer. Take it some other route for big improvements.

It will have a family resemblance to the lower band versions externally, but a completely different design internally.

I will have a look through my pile of old Pye manuals. There may be a service book for one in there somewhere.

I have had a look through my old manuals but unfortunately don't have one covering the T470. If it is of modular construction, there is a good chance that the circuits will be the same or similar to other transmitters of that era.

Bought at Ripon rally perchance? Broken meter glass?

I bought the other one, but haggled him to 50p! (I had just bought the Cambridge for £2...)

Yes Martin... The guy over the way started it off... I asked if he had a screw driver so I could look inside.. while he wandered off... I was collared by the guy opposite..yes it would be nice just to see its workings.

Ah, the vintage fella opposite! Between the two of them I came away with a car full yet dont think I spent over a tenner! Had a nastalgia moment (as my mate calls it - nasty old stuff!) and ended up with a Westminster and some pencil valves.

I very much enjoyed Ripon, small but lots of interesting bits and the sellers knew it was junk and priced accordingly!

We used to service these pye transmitters in the 'bottom' workshop at Kippax, but I sadly was on mobile and handheld stuff in the 'top' workshop! Ive never seen a Varactor tripler in the flesh so it will be nice to play around with

As I have "finished" my HF SSB Transceiver project I will now look at something else..but its choosing a suitable idea...This "AM" thing... is it worth building for ?? or is it as quiet as 2 metres was when SSB Liner 2's came along.
Obviously AM is less complicated than SSB... but is it worth it ?
This PYE TX just looked... "Steve Davis" interestin.

This thread has split 2 ways. Both are quite amazing.
I am not sure what to say next.

Varactor triplers - yes it could go that way. In my case a LW15FM radiophone (long before cellular anything) which works on 23cm - at least it did once upon a time. It has worked GB3PS (Barkway) and GB3-I dunno - Bushey near Watford when it was on. GB3BH? later edit?

Once upon a time GB3VH (in 1981-2 maybe?) was a T470 but the leakage on 2m was a bit embarassing.
It went T461 or T462 once a suitable one could be found

Actually the R470 (the RX of the pair) is another story..
It works OK for fixed links with stable signal paths but it has a special "mangle-em" feature for any mobile signal with fast flutter.

R460 is to be preferred for that reason.

And what about AM mode? On 2m 144.550 is supposed to be centre of activity.
I have built some gear - mainly I can work myself and nobody else.

For AM VHF mode please try 4m! 70.26 AM rules - if only??
But at least I did have a QSO there last 7 days.

Hi Jon. Hmmm lots to think about... I really only bought it for a "donor" item.... but something useful could come from it.. I have a low band AM Cambridge too... so you never know.
