Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Just an update should anyone still be interested in my Winchester updates to the Gemini CP/M bios, I am making good progress.

Targets achieved:
  • I have learnt Z80 assembler, still honing my skills but all OK so far.
  • I have been through the Gemini V1.4 bios in detail and understand pretty much most of it.
  • I have read the SASI spec and swallowed the XEBEC 1410 manual.
  • I have started coding the changes to the Gemini Bios...

I am reasonably happy with my progress and to be honest would be quite disappointed if someone turned up with a Winchester version of the bios as I am having quite a lot of fun with it all. My aim has to have a light a touch as possible to the original code and this seems to be fairly easy given one compromise. i.e.

The Gemini bios supports SD and DD disks and auto senses, the density for the 4 possible floppy disks is stored in the upper nibble of a memory location with the lower nibble indicating the drive. The bios uses one bit to identify the drive (lower nibble) and one bit to identify SD (upper nibble) this means that a maximum of 4 drives is supported. If I accept the compromise (which I have) of supporting only two floppy drives I can then add two further Winchester drives (possibly 4 when emulating a Xebec 1410) with very little change to the Gemini bios code whilst at the same time, using 90% of it. This I am very happy with.

So far the only real change to the existing Gemini routines has been to prevent the density check for the Winchester and adapt the buffer-dma and dma-buffer code to support different sector sizes for Winchester and floppy. This last change was important to me as I wanted the bios to be able to support real period hardware, it turned out to be a very simple change. Naturally there will be additional code to control the Xebec and that is what I am working on as I write.

As usual, full story and progress is here; https://glasstty.com/wiki/index.php/...ni_80-Bus_Saga

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Could do with your expertise...

I have just been given the backup copy of the GM925 machine featured in the YouTube video here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMnQ...&index=3&t=17s). This includes several files relating to the multi-Format Bios as well as an interesting binary file called CPM64W.

Converting the file to hex rows 512 bytes wide I can see what looks like a boot sector, BDOS/CCP and a BIOS. However, there are four rows (2K) at the beginning of the file that I don't recognise. Disassembling this data doesn't seem to produce valid code so I am left wondering what it is.

If I create a disk using the boot sector, BDOS/CCP and BIOS and ignore the initial 2K, it fails to boot producing a system Halt, this could be unrelated of course. Viewing the BIOS part as text shows it to be the Gemini Multiboard 3.4 BIOS.

Below is the file contents with my interpretation marked. Any ideas?

Here is the actual binary.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Interesting - I have not got the whole answer but somethings helpful (maybe).

I cannot identify the first 4 sectors. After that it looks like a gemini boot sector and
ccpz/bdosz/bios.

This bios is for the xebec controller and also hard disk. The bios issues a init_drive_characteristics command to the xebec controller. This was not included in the emulator so I have added it - although the parameters are ignored!. What this command is used for is to specify the mapping between logical blocks in the scsi world to CHS format in the hard disk world.

Having added this extra command I discovered that a ram-disk card is also required a gm833 so this has been added along with a serial port.

I suspect that it is not booting now because I don't have a hard disk image. However below is the config file I have used to get this far.

#verbose

cpuclock 4

board 0xfe gm813_mmu

board 0xb0 gm832 Gemini green
board 0xb8 serial_8250 trace tty tty /dev/ttyS0

board 0xe0 gm849_scsi ~/beaver/disks/gem925.dsk
board 0xfb gm833
board 0xe0 gm849_floppy -geometry S35.2.10.0.512

binload cb00 ./beaver/network/cpm64w.bin

byte 0 c3 00 eb

I hope that helps a little. PS - you need to download the latest xbeaver with command 0x0c added.

Thanks John. Having further trawled the backup I now have the GENSYS.COM command, SYSTEM.CFG, CPM.SYS and a few of the BIOS files (e.g. BIOSSF.SYS, BIOSW.SYS etc). I recognise these from the description of BIOS 3.2 published in 80-BUS news. I wonder if CPM64W is the output from GENSYS.COM.

I have tried running GEMSYS.COM with a simple SYSTEM.CFG but it fails with a ***SYNCHRONISATION ERROR***.

I have popped these files onto a DMP disk in case they are of any interest.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

I downloaded xbeaver from the site (http://81.105.120.101/download/xbeaver.tgz) is this the correct version or do you have a GIT repo somewhere.

JohnBHanson 14th Sep 2019 5:07 pm

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

That is the correct version.

Note ***SYNCHRONISATION ERROR***. means that the CP/M serial number is miss-matched. Having t-net loaded will also cause this error.

My guess is that CPM64W is the winchester disk 64K CP/M version.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Here is a useful "trick" for xbeaver.

xbeaver supports mulltiple named io buses. The default bus the processor uses is called "io". However peripherals can be placed on a different bus. The internal bus extender can be used to map these io ports through to the "io" bus with various mappings. The internal bus extender also has the ability to trace bus cycles.

Looking at the gem925.cfg below - the "trace" bus is used for io and the bus bridge is used to map these to the io bridge. This gives the ability to selectively trace bus cycles.
Best shown by example....

#verbose

cpuclock 4

board 0x00 intbus 0 0xfb xrw trace
board 0xfb intbus 0xfb 2 xrwt trace
board 0xfd intbus 0xfd 3 xrw trace

bus trace

board 0xfe gm813_mmu

board 0xb0 gm832 Gemini green
board 0xb8 serial_8250 trace tty tty /dev/ttyS0

board 0xe0 gm849_scsi ~/beaver/disks/gem925.dsk
board 0xfb gm833
board 0xe0 gm849_floppy -geometry D35.2.10.0.512 ~/beaver/gm512/GM512_ORIGINAL.DMP

bus io

binload cb00 ./beaver/network/cpm64w.bin

byte 0 c3 00 eb

By running this it is clear that the bios is looping writing to all tracks with sector=0. I would guess this is sizing the ramdisk.

Unfortunately the emulator works by allocating more memory to the ramdisk as required (upto MByte). I suspect the gemini software is just looping trying to find the end of the ramdisk and failing.

JohnBHanson 14th Sep 2019 7:52 pm

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

I have added a -maxtrack option to he gm833 command line. You need yet another version of xbeaver.
Looks like your software likes a 2MByte ramdisk. Still needs the disk images gem925.dsk for hard disk and possibly the floppy image as well..

configuration file is as follows

cpuclock 4

#miss out these two lines to inhibit tracing
board 0x0 intbus 0x0 0xff xrwt trace
bus trace

board 0xfe gm813_mmu

board 0xb0 gm832 Gemini green
board 0xb8 serial_8250 trace tty tty /dev/ttyS0

board 0xe0 gm849_scsi ~/beaver/disks/gem925.dsk
board 0xfb gm833 -maxtrack 0x3f
board 0xe0 gm849_floppy -geometry D35.2.10.0.512 ~/beaver/gm512/GM512_ORIGINAL.DMP

#miss out this as well to inhibit tracing.
bus io

binload cb00 ./beaver/network/cpm64w.bin

byte 0 c3 00 eb

This does at least boot the system with M drive (ram drive).

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

I have to add (implement) READ ADDRESS command for the floppy disk controller. This returns the track/sector header.

Also changed controller type to 829 rather than 849. This seems to work although I would have
thought that the 849 would have been the better choice as it allows more floppy drives.

This is the latest config file. Note -o t on the command line enables tracing of IO

#verbose

cpuclock 4

if T board 0x0 intbus 0x0 0xff xrwt trace
if T bus trace

board 0xfe gm813_mmu

board 0xb0 gm832 Gemini green
board 0xb8 serial_8250 trace tty tty /dev/ttyS0

board 0xe0 gm829_scsi ~/beaver/disks/gem925.dsk
board 0xfb gm833 -maxtrack 0x3f
board 0xe0 gm829_floppy -geometry D35.2.10.0.512 &
~/beaver/gm512/GM512_ORIGINAL.DMP

if T bus io

binload cb00 ./beaver/network/cpm64w.bin

byte 0 c3 00 eb

PS - remember to download latest xbeaver.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Thanks for this, do you have the GM925.dsk file?

JohnBHanson 15th Sep 2019 2:28 am

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

No - where would I get gem925.dsk from?

JohnBHanson 15th Sep 2019 3:53 am

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Adding READ ADDRESS command broke early gemini bios versions (eg 1.4).

The problem was the bios issued a READ ADDRESS and just polled the BUSY flag
in the status register to see if the command had completed. It *did not* read the
floppy disk controller data register to recover the data from the READ ADDRESS command. Because of this the emulator did not complete the READ ADDRESS command as the data had not been read by the Z80.

Changed the code so that after 100 reads of the status register without reading the data register the FDC BUSY flag is cleared if it is set.

Yet another version - very sorry.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

I have added your makefile into the distribution. In addition I have fixed another problem in the gemini SCSI driver in that the xebec controller did not de-select after the message state.

Again download the latest version to get the fix. Now the GM925 gets to the M> prompt and you can do directories of A and B (Hard disk) M (Memory Disk) and C (floppy) although I have the wrong type of floppy in the config file. I hope that helps you.

With the correct hard disk image and fingers crossed this should now work.

As you probably worked out - I have not run gemini software on my emulator - But would be greatful if you have a copy of the GM925 hard disk image you could post it on your resources website.

Thank you.

JohnBHanson 15th Sep 2019 5:04 pm

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

One point very worthy of note. The gemini hardware inverts the data that is stored on the disk. This is true for both the hard disk file the emulator uses and also the actual disk used in a gemini computer. It will of course also be true for you SCSI/SD device on the gemini hardware.

You may need to invert the bits that are stored if you receive the data from a third party depending on how it is retrieved.

JohnBHanson 15th Sep 2019 7:26 pm

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Comment on my previous post - the gemini bios inverts the data before presenting it to the hardware. So the data stored in a diskfile/scsi emulator will be correct.

The xbeaver bios records inverted data.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

loading the boot sector from cpm64w.bin - eg the sector starting with 47h 47h at address 0 and then executing from location 2 allows the system to boot.

The simon.rom from your website looks for a signature of 6dh 47h at the start of the boot sector. I think this is a special boot rom for the mfb system and hence fails. Patching the test to 47h 47h at offset 31h in simon.rom tries to boot from floppy.

There is code in simon to boot from the hard disk but I have not found out how to do it.

This does however indicate that the version of simon you have does not match the boot sector starting 47h 47h in cpm64w.bin

I have not managed to do anything with the first four sectors of that file...

Getting there...

I have just this morning been able to boot to M: thank you, I will have a play later today with the latest version. I guess my aim is to get a system that can be used to run GENSYS.

I did notice that this seems to be an MFB system specific version of Simon, I still don't have any other versions. But have requests posted all over the Internet.

I vaguely remember that there was some Simon key combinations described in the 80-Bus News somewhere, I will have a scan at some point just in case it helps.

Absolutely!

To get GEMSYS and BIOS 3.4 working on my hardware would be amazing.

In terms of a disk image, all I have is a backup of the disk as a collection of files. Most of which are normal CP/M apps (WS3, SC2 DBASEII etc.) I have placed some of these on individual disk images on the resources page. I will send over the backup in case it is of any use.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

As usual the boot sequence of gemini preserves the memory from 0100 upwards eg the program area.

This can be useful. use binload in the config file to load a program of choice. The program of choice is of course t-net.com.

binload 0100 ./beaver/network/t-net.com

Add a line to the config file to define a serial port as bvrnet eg..

board 0xb8 serial_8250 bvrnet ~/beaver/network

create a file of suitable size filled with 0xe5 to be the hard disk (About 10MByte) gem925.dsk

run xbeaver with the configuration file.

at the prompt
M>save 0 go.com
M>go n
T-NET
M>
M>

Make sure ~beaver/network has the required files on it - eg t-net pip etc
M>N:PIP A:=N:*.*
And the files will be copied to the emulated hard disk giving an image file

With the correct utilities you should then be able to write the boot track and build a system.

*** NOTE *** this system requires a GM833 ram disk to boot. It copies the command processor into the ram disk and then reloads the command processor from the system
track of the ramdisk. If you don't have a ramdisk it will halt at booting.

You maybe able to use the utilities to generate a system that does not have a ramdisk though - this is new area for me I rolled my own out of public domain software CCPZ/BDOSZ.

Note also the GM925 would have had a double/high density 80 track drive eg 3.5 or 5 inch floppy 1.2M or 1.44MByte - there were 8 inch compatible in high density mode.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

The GM833 could be an issue for me as I don't have one (yet). Never the less a useful exercise and some more Gemini software saved.

I am not sure if it is of any use but the backup of the GM925 is here...https://glasstty.com/wiki/index.php/File:GM925.zip

Many thanks for all your help, I hope you are still having fun...:)

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Good news - I have managed to get a disk image. Here is how to do it

unzip the GM925.zip file with the -LL option to force lower case.
rename directories a to a0 and b to b0

user the following line in the gem925.cfg to map the required drives (Change path to match your system)

board 0xb8 serial_8250 bvrnet &
~/beaver/gm925/gm925/a%d &
~/beaver/gm925/gm925/b%d

boot the system
M>go no
M>pip a:=n:*.*
M>user 1
M1>pip a:=n:*.*
etc
and then for drive b
M>user 0
M>pip b:=o:*.*
M>user 1
M1>pip b:=o:*.*
etc

This will copy the files across to the disk image

reboot (restart xbeaver)
programs gensys and config can then be used to write the system tracks.

I think you can remove the gm833 ramdisk from the configuration and this might provide you with a bootable system (I don't know).

The system track from cpm64w is not the mfb system and the mfb utilities complain (eg setup).

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Good news cpm64w will run *without* a GM833 card. I think it needs the system tracks.

Download from

http://81.105.120.101/download/gem925.zip

for the bootable image

Still needs a boot rom though.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

useful command
gensys system.cfg

OR
gensys mfb.cfg

to configure the hard disk to boot either a standard system or a mfb system.
and then boot to boot the system

This should get you system tracks that are suitable for your real hardware.

This is good progress and in trying to follow along I am experiencing a few difficulties. Below is my xbeaver config file which, when used, boots to M, however, anything else I do causes a system halt e.g.

If I save and run T-Net (go.com in your example) it halts. If I perform a DIR of A or B, it halts. A DIR of C shows garbage.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Yes - I was at that stage. Make sure you have the latest xbeaver that will fix the halting on dir a: dir b: etc. This fixes the command that the xebec needs to set the drive geometry.

I am not sure why you are having t-net crash - this should be the same version you have for the real hardware.

Try downloading the disk image I have posted That has the correct versions in.

Remember go.com is a zero length file that just runs whatever program is in memory.

john_newcombe 17th Sep 2019 9:49 pm

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Thanks for the explanation of GO.COM, I am with it now. I have now managed to boot xbeaver without the GM833 card and can see A: and B:. Although I did download the latest version I think I must have mixed up the versions and re-compiled a previous one... Doh!

In order to use gensys.com to create a boot disk for my real Gemini with RPM, I decided to build a bios based on BIOSFW.SYS rather than BIOSW.SYS. As I understand it this is the version with Winchester support that boots to floppy. The boot sector it creates is interesting... I created a floppy disk image based on this and tried to boot it in xbeaver with my standard config, whilst the Simon ROM attempted to boot it, it failed with a corrupted error message.

Code:

6d 47 31 00 01 b7 20 01 3c 08 3e 0f d3 bc cd 1f 00 b7 28 07 3e 03 d3 bc c3 00 f0 08 c3 00 eb 21 00 d5 01 e4 01 1e 13 db e5 07 16 82 30 02 16 88 08 d3 e4 08 78 d3 e2 7a d3 e0 18 02 77 23 ed 78 28 fc db e3 fa 3c 00 db e0 e6 fc c0 04 78 d6 0a 20 22 47 3a 7e 00 b7 28 0e cb 5a 20 04 08 f6 08 08 7a f6 0c 57 18 0d 3e 5b d3 e0 3d 20 fd db e0 cb 47 20 fa 1d 20 b9 af c9 00 00 00 ...

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

6d 47 is the signature for the multi format bios boot sector. I have been using gensys to create the system and that appears to write the appropriate boot sector for the system being created. Some of the .cfg files on the hard disk can be used as arguments to gensys and these files contain the definition of the system - can be copied and edited to create the system of your choice.

Remember the GM925 would have a double sided 80 track drive fitted - almost certainly one that would do 1.2MByte as well as 800k formats.

Ideally you need to find out how to use simon to boot from hard disk. I am sure it is possible I have seen the hard disk code in it.

I have enjoyed getting experience of gemini software. For a quick note xbeaver has two keyboard settings.

To select gemini mapping
press and hold the left control key, press and release the right control key, release the left control key.
to select wordstar mapping swap swap left and right in the above.

Does make it easier to use cursor keys with gemini programs.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Here is a short program to copy the boot sector from address 180 down to zero and execute it.
you can build a com file by combining the program with the boot sector you want and they
using the cpm save command
Code:

                    ;Program to boot a system
                    ;
;use ddt to enter the program at address $100
;load the boot sector of hard disk at address $180
                    ;type ^c
;type save 1 bootsys.com - to save file to floppy disk

0100                        org    $100
0100  21 80 01      start:  lxi    h,$180
0103  11 00 00              lxi    d,0
0106  01 80 00              lxi    b,$80
0109  ED B0                  ldir
010B  AF                    xra    a
010C  F3                    di

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

If anyone with a Gemini 925 machine is reading this I would like to know what floppy disk controller it is equipped with.

If it is a GM849 or a GM849A version - I wonder if you would let me know what IC14 is (It is normally a 74LS21). Also is there any pins pulled/strapped/mods near this IC.

I am having trouble getting the MultiFormat Bios running. It is tripping up on some bits in the scsi status field that are "undefined" in the manual. The circuit diagram shows these bits come from an 74LS21 but implementing that does not help me. I wonder if there have been some custom mods to the GEM925 to protect the Multi Format Bios from being copied. Any ideas?

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

I am getting someway. Looks like the two bits D6 and D5 on port e5 which are specified as indeterminate are critical for the Multiformat Bios to run.. I have also spotted some odd coding
problems. Some subroutines take parameters after the call. That is ok but if a conditional call is used
and the call is not taken then the parameters are executed as instructions. Also at one point it did an inc (ix-2) which incremented the return address on the stack to the middle of an instruction. The second byte of the instruction happened to be 76 which is halt.

I have created two additional scsi controllers (829m and 849m) that have the correct (I hope) behaviour for running MFB. I suspect these were meant to run on a modified card as a way of doing copy protection.

I have even wondered if my emulator is causing the problem in that the emulation is not perfect - but gemini code does some strange things like aborting transfers part way through.

Still getting closer all the time...

john_newcombe 29th Sep 2019 8:22 am

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

That's good news, well done. If the hardware is different as you suspect, I guess I won't see this working on my hardware.

Just as a matter of interest, is there a way to emulate a 4Mhz clock speed? I can see a cpuclock parameter in the config file but changing this from 1 to 0 stops the boot process. I ask so that I can test a delay routine i have coded.

I am currently working on coaxing the scsi2sd card (in xebec mode) into life via the GM839 SASI port and at the moment I cannot even select it, it hangs waiting for the msg bit so rather than looping in a waiting condition I want to use a delay so that I can investigate what is actually being returned etc. The scsi2sd xebec mode is probably not a complete implementation but I will persevere as I like the additional level of authenticity. Perhaps one day I can get hold of the Xebec card and move the disk emulation down the line a little.

JohnBHanson 29th Sep 2019 9:28 am

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Yes running at 0MHz stops the Z80 emulation. This is deliberate and was added later. It is actually how the network servers work by having a serial card (loopback) that is just a null modem cable connecting two serial ports - one of which is a real serial port and the other is the network server for the host.

Anyway putting numbers in other than zero changes the speed of emulation. It is a very approximate indicator of the CPU speed in MHz. So cpuspeed 4 will set for a 4MHz system.

If you look at gemini_scsi.c there is a DEBUG flag - set this to a high number for debug output on the emulator.

If you are using the Gemini version of software then it uses commands
00 - Test Unit Ready
08 - SCSI Read
0a - SCSI Write
0c - Init Drive Characteristics

Gemini software also issues reset during booting to abandon a disk read which could be what you are hitting.

I had to add the last one to support Gemini software as it allows the xebec controller to convert Logical Block to CHS addressing for the disk.

PS - Simon does boot a hard disk if you hit a key at the correct time. Any key seems to work.

Do you have a hard disk image that works on the emulator. PS - the latest version of xbeaver
can boot load and execute gemini boot sectors without any roms loaded (Loads the boot sector
at address 0 which is the most common).

Are you running a gemini image or your own code?

john_newcombe 29th Sep 2019 2:56 pm

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

I am running my own code as a com file under CP/M (Bios 1.4) accessing the controller directly with the commands you mention. I have followed the Xebec guide for protocol details etc. I think the issue I have is more fundamental. I think I need to pop the scope on the select and other control lines to see what is happening. My code works ok on the emulator, it is the real hardware and the scsi2sd in particular that seem to be the issue at the moment. Naturally I will keep you posted.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

What a pleasure and surprise to find you, and how good to know I'm not the only person with an interest in 80 Bus systems. I haven't read John Newcombe's posts in detail yet but I'll be pleased to help where I can, because I'm doing something similar with my own systems which came to light when we moved house recently. I have three.

(1) Nascom 3, in official case with dual drives. Includes Nascom2 , FDC, AVC, MAP80 256K RAM and the little Phoenix monitor.

(2) Nascom 2, 19" rack mounted, inc. Nascom2, 48K RAM B, I/O.

(3) Gemini Galaxy 1 in official enclosure, inc. GM813 CPU, FDC, SVC, RAM-Disk, Climax colour, 64K RAM and Gemini keyboard.

I also have any amount of CP/M software, including the Gemini, Nascom and MAP80 BIOS implementations, compilers and assemblers, and the Micropro suite (Wordstar etc).

(1) used to run CP/M, and I'm currently restoring that function. I reprogrammed the boot EPROM and rewired the decode links, which had been set up for some non-standard dual-boot arrangement with CP/M and NAS SYS. It's now OK except for the drives, which probably just need cleaning after 10 years in the attic.

(2) is the only one fully working, and in its current configuration can handle simple control applications. It used to be part of a larger Gemini-expanded system inc. floppy and Winchester, but I left the drives in a lab at work and infuriatingly someone assumed they were rubbish and threw them out, together with a lot of documentation, a Pluto board, and another Phoenix monitor.

(3) doesn't have any disk drives, but when I manage to get hold of a replacement Gemini one I'll run CP/M on it, and write GSX drivers for the Climax board. I'd then like to get CP/M Plus or MP/M running, both of which are going to require a BIOS rewrite. I might just have to buy a BBC disk drive, but I like everything matching and am very keen to find a Gemini one.

I also have a Telcon Zorba machine which, unlike the Nascom, worked perfectly after 20 years of disuse, all its disks still readable. I intend to use this to write a BIOS for the other machines if I find their system disks are trashed.

I used to know my way round these machines fairly well, although I'm going to have to get back up to speed. I'll keep an eye on the thread and chip in where I can.

If Peter B in Carshalton still has the MP/M manual to spare (post 5th May), I'd be very grateful to take him up on the offer, and will put it to very good use.

If you have bios source code or indeed any gemini utilities/source code I would love a copy. I am currently trying to get the MultiFormat bios running.

Shame about the pluto it is quite a nice graphics card. I have a pluto 2 which is even nicer just a shame it is 12 inches deep.

Yes, I've got a complete multiformat BIOS source, or at least, I did have. I remember modifying it several times and reassembling it. However, until I manage to recreate my Gemini QDDS drive, I don't know whether the disks are still readable. Do you have that format? How do I get in touch with you?

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Hi
I also love these systems. I have a Nascom2 ( with FDC, 48kRAM, AVC, IO) .
If you are stuck for Disk drives I ended up using disk drives meant for a BBC micro to get my system working. The TEAC FD55F drives were used on those made switchable for 40/80 track. I fixed the drives to 80 track and NASDOS was quite happy. Presumably other 40/80 track drives will likewise be compatible. BBC floppy drives are always up on ebay quite cheap.
I have been using it with NASDOS but I want to try PolyDos and CP/M. I have the boot ROMS but I need the boot disks. I have found disk images online but don't have any means to turn the images into real disks! If anybody has boot disks I would love a copy.

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Hello cosmocat, hello jncoleman. I started a new thread to describe my NASCOM projects, which you might be interested in.

@cosmocat: I can lend you a PolyDos boot disk, but it is 35-track DSDD (350Kbyte). Another way is to use my SDcard adaptor connected to the PIO. It uses a special version of the Polydos ROM. You could probably use it as a way to boot-strap to a real disk drive.

@jncoleman: I'd be interested to hear about the history of your 3 machines, as I guess at least one of them must have had to earn its keep in its younger days. My own NASCOM 2 (+MAP Video/Floppy controller + MAP 256KRAM) was only ever used for "self-education" purposes.

Neal

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

Hi Neal.
I might take you up on the offer of a boot disk but I am a little confused by these disk formats. Do you mean the drive the disk works with only steps over 35 tracks , and so the track spacing would be incompatible with a 40/80 track drive? How does PolyDos know how many tracks the drive works over?
I have taken a copy of your PolyDos3 image ( that one seems most compatible with my hardware) from your github and I was mulling the possibility of writing a program on the Nascom to read the disk image (in sections) over the serial port (from a PC) then using low level NASDOS routines to write the disk tracks so that when the PolyDos boot rom was installed the files would appear correctly. I was unsure if this approach would work though.
I think I may instead look at your SDcard adaptor as you suggest.

JohnBHanson. Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately the march of progress is such that none of my PCs have floppy drive interfaces on the motherboards anymore so I can't write a disk.

Andrew.

Although I cant speak for the Nascom disks, I have used a BBC 40/80 track drive formatted for 35 tracks for use on the Gemini with the DDDS 360k disk format.

One approach I have used to create a real disk, is to boot to a Gotek (see https://glasstty.com/wiki/index.php/...ni_80-Bus_Saga) and copy sectors/files across to the real disk.

JohnBHanson 22nd Oct 2019 2:18 am

Re: Gemini 80-Bus System

35 track drives have the same track spacing as 40 track drives - which is double that of an 80 track drive. So reading a 35track disk can be done witha 40 track or 80 track drive. In PC terms that is either a 360k drive or a 1.2M drive.

Gemini formats has a shortish lead in from the index hole to the start of the first sector and this can cause problems with 765 floppy controllers.

The only real z80 machine I have is a matmos/alphatronic PC - and it has a 765 disk controller. I have written a multi-format bios for it. I have upgraded its floppy disks to 1.44 MByte 3.5 inch drives having had problems with its original floppies from the early 80s deteriorating. I do have plans to add other drives at some point - its a matter of building the cables and cases at some point.
