Grundig 3028
 

Hello,

I've inherited a lovely Grundig 3028. It was running last year pretty well but I'd like to change the old 2 core flex to something a little more 'healthy'!

The current flex is in a terrible state - would it be a fairly easy job for me to take off the back and replace the old flex for a newer version?

Would I need to use 2 or 3 core flex?

I'm not electronically minded at all but I've loved this old radio for about 30 years and when the lady recently passed away she left it to me in her will.

I'd love to get it up and running so I can use it.

Any help would be gratefully received.

These are nice radios but as the set is sixty years old, as well as the mains cord, there's undoubtedly going to be some other failing parts that need replacing. These sets have exposed mains voltage selector contacts so do not plug it in while the back is off.

Thanks Andrew - I saw that thread you've linked and thought I might be biting off more than I can chew!

I'm probably going to end up taking it to someone who can work on it and give it a 'MOT'.

What type of flex would be best to buy? I'd like to see if I can change the flex - that will give me some form of 'ownership'! At least I'd have done something.

At the risk of sounding 'boring', you can replace the mains flex with another two cored type, but fitting a three cored one is a 'modification' and can have 'consequences' legally if anything went wrong with the set and caused an 'incident' anywhere.

I have one of these sets and it still has a two core 'flex' fitted. When the back cover is in place there's no metal parts to touch, so no need for an earth, which could have been fitted by the manufacturers originally due to it having transformer isolation, but they didn't. These sets wouldn't conform to modern safety standards even with the original back cover fitted anyway.

As said, I can assure you that there are certainly two capacitors in the audio amplifier output stage which MUST be replaced if they haven't already been replaced by somebody else in the recent past, so please check.

Not boring at all - thanks for the information.

Would someone be able to point me in the right direction as to where I can find the capacitors to buy? I think I remember a capacitor looking like a mini blue bucket with two wires sticking out of it (a vague recollection of my school days).

I'll get some 2 core cable with which to replace the main power lead as that is in a terrible state.

Any ideas of people who might be able to help me for a reasonable price would be much appreciated (not sure if that's allowed on here so send me a message).
