Does anyone know the diameter of the capstan belt in these recorders?


It seems near impossible to get them from Germany and it takes too long to get them from the US.

Hi,
The PRB database lists it as a FR16.9 part, so 16.9” in circumference.

Unfortunately the database was last updated in 2006, but this should suffice for the majority of vintage audio gear with belts.

I have had issues with non-original capstan belts for X-decks in the past, not running true or being slightly off size. If you find a source of belts that are accurate and trustworthy, it would be good to know. I suppose any issues with belts are increasingly going to be overshadowed by issues with the capstan motors though, as evidenced by the increasingly silly prices being asked even for the 7W motors.

So have I. If memory serves, the 1000 and 1000R belts are slightly different, as the belt has to ride onto different drive surfaces as the motor is reversed. I was able to get OE components when I was working n two of these nachines a while ago, but I don't know the present situation.

Yes, and as I recall I ended up using belts from a supplier in the US, that were supposed to be for the reversing deck, on a single-direction model as they were closer to that spec and would not behave on the R. I would not have taken as deep an interest had a nearly-new X-1000 not been my first reasonable recorder when I was 14, that turned in some eminently satisfactory results while I was learning to record. It was something of a disappointment, when I first opened it up, to discover the distinctly lightweight capstan drive setup that lay within.

That admittedly small DC motor is in a number of Teac decks. Perhaps the best way to destroy it is playing sticky shed tapes. I've had some success repairing motors that weren't too damaged from overloading. When removing and refitting the motor it's important to retain all washers in their original positions, at least on reversing models.

Sam, "Skywavebe", over on Tapeheads, recommends 16.8" circumference belts for the X-1000R.
