Picked these up today.
Anyone know the date range for these old batteries.
I remember seeing them in the 80's I think.

I would say definitely before 1980.

I can remember playing with HP2's when I was in primary school, which I left in 1973.

Yes, my guess would go that way too, I was ten in '69 and am fairly confident I was using these in torches before then. The second post of an old thread refers to a 1966-7 catalogue including HP2, HP7, HP11 and HP16 -

and I think this (rather than the style shown in the first photo of that thread) may have been the original livery.

I think they were already available in 1967, certainly by 1968. When I was a student I bought a set of 6 for my Philips EL3585 tape recorder, but they were too powerful for its centrifugal speed regulator to cope with, the motor running too fast with fresh batteries, so I stuck with the ordinary U2 cells.

Didn't think they'd be that old.

I was born in 1970 so I didn't start buying batteries until I was about 10, I remember the style from then, but I wasn't sure.

Well I'm 100% going to keep them, they are in such good clean condition. I'll use them as props I think.

The earliest date I can find for adverts of that logo style is 1964. In a 1961 advert they were still using the EverReady style with the large E and R.
I remember the silver linings coming in sometime in the 70's as I was an eager battery purchaser and I thought they were rather snazzy

I was certainly buying SP2`s Prior TO 1968, their was also a SP2, marketed as a leak proof U2, I recall.
I cannot recall when I last saw them for sale, but must be years ago.

From memory, the white metal-cased U2 replacement (SP2) cells did not actually claim to be leakproof. The ones I bought in the late 1960's just said "sealed". They used to cost me 5/- for a set of 6 for my tape recorder, compared with 4/- for six U2 cells. I never ever had any of the old cardboard-cased blue U2 batteries leak and only used SP2s (which did sometimes leak) after ordinary U2s were discontinued. Both types only yielded about 2Ah at the 100mA rate.

The EverReady "leakproof" series were numbered starting LPU.

The last time a saw one of the HP2's Brian pictures was about four years ago, took a bit of effort to remove as rather than leak in the conventional way little blisters had erupted all over the steel case. It bore a Woolworths 7p sticker suggesting that either they were sold loose or the label had been idly transferred from the packaging. I am the same age as Brian and remember these. I guess the date range would be of the order of ....'68 to '75.
