Distributed amplifier
Hello..
Does anyone have the document named " distributed amplification" by ginzton and hewlett.? I dont have access on ieee group...and is unable to find any pdf. Also can you guys suggest some good books on vacuum tube distributed amplifier desing...? Thank you.... |
Re: Distributed amplifier
I have found it on the internet some time ago when looking for it, so it may still be out there. Noe was also one of the authors.
I had a paper copy at work which a librarian obtained from the British Library, so I didn't bother keeping an electronic copy when I found it on the internet. That paper copy, my desk, and the whole HP building are all long-gone, I'm afraid. David |

1 Attachment(s)
I have IEEE access at my PC at work so I had a go at downloading your doc.
However, it is 2.5Mb in size so it (just) exceeds the forum limits for a pdf file. I've attached an image of the first page below. Is this the correct document? If so I'll try and find a way to send it to you. |
Re: Distributed amplifier
Try zipping it (as in .zip file) and see if it comes in under the 1.91Mb limit, then it can be posted here.

Re: Distributed amplifier
Good practical examples of valve based distributed amplifier designs are used in the vertical amplifier stages of the Tektronix 545A and the 548A Oscilloscopes of the late 1950/ early 1960's. As far as I remember there is a good description of these in the Tektronix instruction/service manuals which can be downloaded from the BAMA website.

Re: Distributed amplifier
That is the right paper, Jeremy.
It is the seminal paper on distributed amplifiers. I had a copy in my files for decades. All the design equations you need, and some interesting stuff on tapered lines. David |
Re: Distributed amplifier
Thanks, David.
It sounds like you might be interested in a copy too! Therefore, I've tried to upload it here: https://www.qsl.net/g/g0hzu//RF%20Tr...F/01697772.pdf Let me know if the link works for you. I tried zipping the pdf file but it didn't reduce in size much. It was still too big... Hopefully, the link above will work. |
Re: Distributed amplifier
Thanks, Jeremy, that's a good clean copy. I think I may still have a copy of a copy somewhere, and it's complete with the references etc.
It's a really important paper. It set out the whole business, and lives on in the wideband integrated distributed amps going up into the millimetre bands. Cheers, David |
Re: Distributed amplifier
If you want to see an example of a really powerful one, look at this:

Re: Distributed amplifier
Chapter 10 of the book "Radio Transmitters" by V.O. Stokes is a full write-up on the design of the high power types. Worth a read if you can find it.
The 1kW amplifier panels (using 4CX250B's) occasionally turn up at radio rallies. I've seen at least two, over the years, at Stockwood Park. I don't know if anybody has got one going. It seems there was a 40kW version too... |
Re: Distributed amplifier
They were used in cable-TV 'launch amplifiers' - the circuit of the type designed by EMI and used in the Abingdon cable-TV project is here:

Re: Distributed amplifier
Hello evryone....
I apologise for the late reply.....i am really sorry...... And i got the paper......thank you all for your help and kind suggestion.your opinion is very valuable to me....as where i live no one knows anything about vacuum tube technology....i have nowhere to go...but got a great place to talk here..... |
Re: Distributed amplifier
I am just wondering. ..that can i make the range to more low frequency? ...like from 10 hz to 1 mhz...? I am new to tube electronics....so trying to keep the power as low as 50 watt per se....as some of you people suggested me earlier.....can i cover this range as i mentioned previously with this technique....?
And thank you all again..... |
