Roberts button cap solution
 

We've all been there, picked up a seventies Roberts radio with one or more of the aluminium button caps missing. This is quite common due to ageing of the glue holding the cap in place coupled with the speed of the button popping up when changing bands or switching off.
I needed a small aluminium cylinder that had a closed end that could be machined so as to leave me with just the closed end with a shallow skirt. Looking through my spares, I found an old electrolytic capacitor with just the right diameter (with the shrink-on sleeve removed) to be able to fit over the stepped edge of the plastic button.
Carefully removing the last 1.5mm of the capacitor in the lathe (chuck rotated by hand), the new cap was glued to the plastic button then spun up to give the "engine turning" of the cap top. A bit of final burnishing with a small stick finished the job.
I am sure that others could improve on this with a little extra care, but you get the idea.
