UKVRRR Google custom searches.

Is there a problem with the search facility of this website. The Custom search returns results for the whole web and at the same time logs you out of UKVRRR.
Is this a fault or me, can it be fixed.
thanks
Mike

I just tried it and it worked fine for me Mike (fully updated Firefox and Win10).

Re: UKVRRR Google custom searches.

If this was a general problem members would have let the mods know about it, but we've received no other complaints.

I just tried it using Microsoft Edge on my PC. The first few results are from the whole web, but the rest are specific to this site. No problems using Google Chrome on a smart phone either.

Please let's not turn this thread into a general moan about Google.

Works for me. Google Custom Search does sometimes add sponsored results, depending on many factors including the browser and screen size. There's nothing we can do about this if we want the facility.

Google only indexes areas of the forum that are viewable by guests, so you won't see any results from Modern Technology or other restricted areas.

If you really are only seeing results from the internet and not from the forum, please post some screenshots and we will investigate.

Generally issues with being logged out unexpectedly are resolved by ticking "Remember Me" when logging in.

Using an advert blocker add-on in your browser such as AdBlock Plus should get rid of the sponsored results from Google.

We know the Google Custom Search isn't perfect, but it is generally better than the built in search which is why we offer it as an option.

Re: UKVRRR Google custom searches.

I have "remember me" ticked.
It may be because I block all google cookies.
But should the UKVRRR website require me to allow google to track me.
I have tested a google search on my own website and it works fine. But then no one is required to be logged in on my website.
I now believe it has something to do with WWW not being included with any of the google results for UKVRRR.
Maybe others don't speak up and just accept things not working quite right.

Works well here, W10 and chrome, I don't block any cookies (ever) a search on roberts radios brings up about 3,060 results in 0.18 seconds and 4 ads.

All the results are from vintage-radio and I don't get logged out.

Click on one of the searches and see if you can view the poster's profile.

I clicked on the first result:

Clicked on Neil's name/public profile and it all worked as expected, is that what you meant?

I am using an iPad and it works ok for me, also allows viewing the public profile, tried a few searches and public profiles.

Doesn’t help your problem though but it’s working ok as far as I can tell.

Re: UKVRRR Google custom searches.

You don't have to be logged into the forums to use the Google custom search facility.

However if the search finds a post and you click on the poster's username you'll be asked to log in or register.

Re: UKVRRR Google custom searches.

Re post #10, I do use an Ad blocker. I am only seeing searches within the forum.

Re: UKVRRR Google custom searches.

I cannot just block cookies for one site, with this browser it’s all or nothing. However when blocking all sites, including this one of course, I get logged out as you describe.

So does your cookie blocker just block Google or is something else going on as well?

Re: UKVRRR Google custom searches.

I have a suspicion that this has something to do with browser settings. My browser (Firefox) is set to open links in a new window. When I use the forum's Google search function and select a result the browser opens a new window with me showing as still logged-in. If I then select a link in the new window (ie, thread) it'll open yet another window showing me as logged-out. If I then return to the original search window and click the back button I'm shown as still logged-in. ???

Re: UKVRRR Google custom searches.

If you click on one of the search results is it opening in the same window or a new one? If it opens in a new window and you're not saving cookies it might explain why you're getting logged off.

David

Sounds plausible.

If you search using Google (not the forum's search facility, just 'general' Google) for something and you include "ukvrrr" in the search field do you get the same list of ukvrrr-only returns that you would have if you'd searched from within the forum ?

Sadly it's been true for a while that 'If you aren't paying for the product then you are the product' :-).

Re: UKVRRR Google custom searches.

What ever was causing the problem has gone away now as when I click on a search result the new tab showing the page shows I am still logged in as Crackle and I can view profiles etc.
