Sanyo VTC 5400 P - Belt Query

Hi,

I have an old Sanyo Betacord video VTC 5400P which isn't working as it should.

The first problem I have encountered is a really slack loading belt. Whilst the rest of the mechanism seems to work quite well I would like to replace the full set.

I've had a look through this forum and can see links to some Sanyo belt sets but I'm unsure if these are suitable for this particular model.

Can anyone let me know the belt specs I should be ordering or advise of a UK based supplier? Or.. should I just buy a generic set and hope for the best fit.

Any advice would be appreciated.

With Thanks

Neil

Hi. I can't find anything from the UK, but I found a set from Germany:
https://www.safferthal.de/de/VR-91-Riemen.html
It's also a good idea to clean the idler tyre that drives the loading ring. The ones for the VTC 5000/5150 or newer models won't fit as these have a completely different mechanism.

Regards,

Fivos

Update: There is a loading belt for the 5300 (same as the 5400) in the UK, right here:

Thank you for your help. I've opted for the belt set from Germany and will replace all of them.

I'd never have found that website, so thanks.

The machine is a beauty and in amazing cosmetic condition so I'm looking forward to getting it going.

Glad I could help. I have a 5000 and 5350. Totally worth restoring. Very reliable decks.

Hi..

I am hoping someone may be able to help me.

I've replaced the shot belts on this Sanyo Betacord 5400P, the good news is the loading belt now works really well and the machine laces up when a tape is inserted.
I have lubricated the unit and given it a good clean, lots of old belt debris.

The mechanism now functions when play and fast forward are pressed but when I press rewind the unit starts rewinding and then jars to a halt. If I manually move the gear turning the counter rewind functions perfectly.

When a tape is inserted it tries to rewind but again, it stops.

Am I missing something obvious??
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

The tape counter area on this and the 5300 has a sensor and if for any reason that counter belt does not do it's job, a safety circuit will trigger stop.
I see you mentioned it functions OK when you spin this counter pulley. Hence you have your answer.

Kevin. Why did they put hall-effect sensors on the tape counters instead of the take-up reel base on the 5300/5350/5400? The 5000 and 9300 have the sensor under the reel table.

Maybe it was because the 5300/5400 had a mechanical tape counter and to free up room elsewhere.
Or even cheaper to do?

My 1979 Panasonic NV-8600 isn't different. It has a rotating magnet on the tape counter with a sensor. I have a question/issue regarding my VTC 5350. When I press eject, I hear a squeaking sound from the mechanism after the cassette carriage is released. Do you know which parts I have to lubricate? That mechanism is way more complicated than the VTC 5000 and still uses plastic parts on the reel chassis so I'm afraid of breaking something.

With that more complicated set up I would look at anything moving i.e spools, gears especially the shaft's they spin on. You will find the culprit there. The plastic used on the Sanyo's is a lot more durable than that used on Sony's so don't worry about breaking things.

I can see something moving, but not any gears. Can you take a look on this video? It shows the problem. As you can probably hear, it sometimes sounds like normal (clicking sound), but sometimes it makes the squeaking sound. Maybe the solenoid is rubbing against something?

It could be the solenoid shaft is a bit dry and could do with a tiny bit of suitable oil on this.
As it's only in eject mode it does this I think you've found the area responsible.

Thanks to everyone for helping me with this. The problem was the belt driving the gear which moved the counter was wrong. Replaced it and it's all fine.

Thank you Kev. I will take a look in a few days when I will have access to the machine. Another question. If I want to adjust the tape path alignment for better tracking/tape interchangeability with other machines, do I need to adjust this nut?
